One of the joys of watching t’League live is the crowd.

The rise and fall of noise as the game unfolds.

On Tv .. Both Sky & BBC, the production always involves wiring the referee up, giving full voice to a high pitched squeal.

“Move, hold it, hoove, inside, away, mooove, stay, haaaave, hold, two .. etc etc” ..

it is more like sheep dog trials than league.

so far removed than the live experience

why do they do it that way ?

or is it just me ?

Ideally, the ref's mic would be low to the point where it is barely audible.

Only about 10% of what he says is relevant to the TV viewer, but I feel we need to hear:

"Held!" when the player has not been put to ground
When the ref specifically calls a player out as offside, so he can opt out of a tackle to avoid the penalty
When a player is called in for a word. (that's when they could turn his volume up a little bit).

It’s not has bad as Ben Thaler doing video ref duties. He always sounds like he’s had to rush back form the loo, but didn’t quite finish what he has there for.

As an aside, I've often wondered about referees doing this...

Just imagine England v Australia. Australia winning by one point, one minute on the clock and the referee, in front of the sticks,20m from the Australian tryline, warns an Australian player that he is offside, he opts out of a tackle and avoids a penalty.

Or.......referee keeps quiet. Is he really responsible for 'coaching' players ? Player gets called offside due to his indiscipline, penalty given in front of the sticks, England win by a point.

Just a thought....

I think that is not the right way to look at it. In all the ref courses I have attended over the years, they have always told us that the ref should, wherever possible, take measures to minimise the amount of penalties he has to give. Calling a player out as offside is absolutely fine. He's not shouting "don't tackle", he simply telling him that he is offside, what the player does next is up to him.

It's awful, I don't know why anyone would want to listen to that and yet it's been going on for years now. The only reason I can think it's played is due to some malign influence, like that of rugby union, to make people switch off.

Please stop miking up referees, it sounds bad.
