A picture of the Billy Boston statue in Wigan popped up on my facebook feed and it got me wondering what else there was around the world that references our sport.

An example here in Hull is the main road into the city is called the Clive Sullivan Way.

There's a statue of a rugby player in Dewsbury, with a list of players from Dewsbury on it (and Lee Gilmour's name with the wrong spelling). John Holmes has a statue at Headingley. Mike Gregory Street in Warrington, Neil Fox Way in Wakefield, Gus Risman Street in Salford.

Pre Rugby League there is Stoddart Street in South Shields named after Andrew Stoddart who captained England at Cricket, Rugby Union and the British Lions at Rugby Union and Aussie Rules Football.

Reason I added him is most of the players in the 1888 Lions came from clubs that would become Northern Union aka Rugby League.

There's a whole town in Lincolnshire named after Sir Billy.

He may have missed out on an NRL grand final fairytale finish, but retired Broncos captain Darren Lockyer gets what may be the next best thing – a highway renamed in his honour.

The 85 kilometre stretch of the Warrego Highway, between Ipswich and Toowoomba, will soon be renamed the Darren Lockyer Way.

There is a stone pillar with a blue plaque at Knowsley Road where Saints used to play. It took me ages to visit the place as it hurt knowing the old hallowed ground was gone.

Fitting that the ball is at his feet, given his reputation as a master of kicking field goals.  It is a bit sad that many probably don’t realise that that is a lost art because of the silly Australian habit of of nowadays calling drop goals field goals.
