Is there a minimum requirement for team to play in these championships like have a 6 team competition in their countries?

No. Not many countries would pass that test if that were the case.

However, I believe there is a limit of 7 heritage players per team, in all divisions.

This is great to see and I hope these countries can use it as a platform to develop.

What's happening with Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France though?

France have a World Cup qualifier against Jamaica.

Ireland play Netherlands in a friendly before the Euro Championships, then a two match series against Wales during them.

Great to see, hopefully these things can really build some consistency.

Typical of RL that it is those nearest the top (but not quite there) who seem to lack the ability to do these properly.

How balanced are these groups and does it work like the Nations League? Greece for example made the last world cup but are in the division below Malta and the Netherlands?

I get why France can't take part (although Cook Islands have managed to have 2 Pacific Bowl matches before their qualifier against South Africa so still manageable).

But surely could have had a triangular series between Ireland, Wales and Scotland? Are Scotland even playing this autumn?

I think it was supposed to be that way, but they may have just ended up doing it based on what worked best logistically.  I believe this is the first Euro Championships that are entirely self-funded by the nations, whereas in the past, they were getting a few grand as a match grant from the ERL.

Ukraine's emphatic win over Netherlands proves that (I am sure they would do the same to Malta and possibly even Serbia).  Greece too, you could argue would be stronger than the "Group B" nations.

Serbia beat Ukraine 50-10 in October last year.

Serbia were propped up by 7 heritage players including:  Nick Cotric, David Nofoaluma and Nick O'Meley.  Ukraine had zero.

Fast forward to this year and Ukraine have 7 heritage players, including Jett Cleary.  Not sure if Serbia will have any, but will wait to see what squad they announce.  But if it's Ukraine with those 7 Aussies, against an all-domestic Serbia, then yes, I am putting my house on Ukraine.

If it's a mirror image of last year's heritage player availability, then yes they'd have the advantage.

Perhaps those Ukrainian heritage players should've put their hand up last year when there was a chance of World Cup qualification.

though I agree fully with your point… Ukraine had Tigris Polata, Daniel Janissen and a couple others against Serbia last year - it wasn’t wholly domestic.

Perhaps it should be the rule that you can only use players from your domestic competion in these events to grow the game in them countries.

There used to be a rule for how many heritage players could be used, it used to be:

Group A:  15/17 could be heritage (still not convinced that Scotland and Ireland indeed mustered 2 local players in their matches, but supposedly the rule was being enforced)

Group B:  7/17

Group C - 4/17

Group D - 3/17

I think things have changed now, but I think all of Group B and lower is now 7/17.

Which match were you thinking of where the rule was not complied with?

Well it has supposedly been a rule since circa 2013. I could dig into the archives at some point if you like? But I am pretty sure many times they competed in Euro Group A without any local players.

2015

Well kudos to Ireland then!  At a quick look, that very same Ireland vs Scotland fixture, Scotland initially announced 3 in their 21-man squad:

SCOTLAND
Danny Addy (Bradford Bulls), Nathan Massey (Canterbury Bulldogs), David Scott (Doncaster), Gregor Ramsay (Easterhouse Panthers), Lewis Clarke, Finn Murphy  (Edinburgh Eagles), Ben Hellewell (Featherstone Rovers), Danny Brough, Joe Wardle  (Huddersfield Giants), Harvey Burnett, Oscar Thomas  (London Broncos), Louis Senter (Halifax), Sonny Esslemont, Adam Walker  (Hull KR), Josh Barlow (Swinton Lions), Alex Hurst (Tweed Heads Seagulls), Corbyn Kilday (Wakefield Trinity), Ben Kavanagh (Widnes Vikings), Brett Phillips, Callum Phillips (Workington Town), Joe McLean (Uni of Gloucs All Golds)
