So the Ashes tour is one man down because a player would rather go to a wedding, and we lost a test match last year because the Samoa squad wanted to go to a wedding instead. Leeds Wheelchair team were excluded from the playoffs as they went to a wedding instead of playing one of their Super League fixtures. Is Rugby League incompatible with weddings?

Maybe I notice this trend as my brother got married on Grand Final day so I missed my team winning the title, but anybody else found that Rugby League has got in the way of weddings, or worse had weddings get in the way of Rugby League?

Something about the JJB Stadium, a wedding and a Wigan match comes to mind but I can't remember the details.

Hey, it's a family sport.

I think it's because around the time most people marry they're probably at their peak in rugby league age too. Late 20s these days. Or they have family a little older or a little younger.

Combine that with RL families planning for the off season. There's only a handful of months to do it which coincide with rep season.

Family is far more important than a RL match in my opinion.

However, if the matches were actually announced a bit earlier for once then the two events could easily be made to work around each other.

Hits the nail on the head

This is just a function of us never planning anything, and so how can we expect players to? I certainly wouldn't miss my brother's wedding because of work, but also I know my brother wouldn't plan his wedding on a weekend he already knew I couldn't attend.

Yes.

It's also possible the wedding date was set when the Ashes was still planned to be in Australia.

To be fair when the games governing bodies treat international RL as an irregular afterthought, don't plan and change things at a whim it should be no surprise that players can't reliably plan around it either.

This is the crux of it. These games were announced on March 26th this year, just under 7 months before the first game.

Don't know what it's like in Australia, but good luck phoning up decent wedding venues in this country to enquire about availability 6 months ahead and not having them burst out laughing.

This is, of course, before we get to the whole can't come because of a terrorist incident in a different continent/ pandemic only ended a year ago/ what's a passport situation that seems to happen to every Australian RL team supposedly coming to the UK.

I was one of their many entitled "why won't the world organise Challenge Cup games around our awful stadium schedule?" tantrums when the BBC wanted to show a CC game on a Saturday.

I organised my wedding on a Saturday deliberately with a Saints game on the Friday so that the relatives would have a game to go to.

Unfortunately the game was postponed in the end due to Covid but it was a nice weekend I suppose.

I got married in 2010. No clashes with matches, however the Grand Final between Fev & Fax was two days later, on the day we set off on our honeymoon. I remember following the score on the BBC app, and wondering why the match hasn't finished before we left Heathrow.

Never occurred to me to even consider when the Grand Final would be when booking: why would it have impacted on a Fev fan. 🙄
