to be honest to have your season ended by 2 blatant forward passes and a knock on over the line - we I  feel sorry for him- saints would be in the final next week if they had been pulled up - good luc

Why did Saints appoint him? Going down the Club Legend route so rarely works out well and big clubs don't need to experiment. It's like they learned nothing from the Cunningham experience.

They also wouldn't of been in the semi final in the first place if not for the shambolic decision the week before that went for them. Karma can be cruel

Feel a little for Wello. Is he a great coach? Probably not but the recruitment and retention has been poor and in RL that is never solely down to the coach. As Padge pointed out the other day money may well be an issue but I honestly believe that Welllo has been a scapegoat for others who have been more than happy to dine out in the good times. Great club servant and really nice fella. Great coach no but easy to blame IMHO.

He's been there long enough to have had an influence on that recruitment and retention though

Wane at Wigan turned down the top job saying he wasn't ready and still had a lot to learn. A wise man. That should really be pointed out to retirees with a coaching career in mind.

I think while I get this response, I also know he worked as an assistant under Woolf and was well-spoken about. I don’t think clubs value enough how different being a head coach is to an assistant.

Feel sorry for him. Clearly not given the backing to sign players like the top teams have, a fith placed finish and semi final in playoffs is far from a disaster.

Is a case of entitlement that St's fans expect a top 2 finish.

Sorry m8 ok we got lucky with the decisions but had we not got them we wouldn't have just capitulated and give sts the game we would have stepped up a gear and found a way over, you don't play the same way when winning a game as you do when you need a score.

Sts had two play the balls in Rovers 20meter zone as opposed to Rovers 28, you don't win a game without getting to the right part of the field.

How much of it is actually Wellens' fault is up for debate, but they have undoubtedly gone backwards during his reign. The remarkable late win at Leeds papered over the cracks, they haven't been great all year. Had Wakefield and Hull not suffered with injuries the way they did there was every chance they could have missed the playoffs entirely. I do think they needed a change.

Feel for Wellens, you want it to work out as he's a club legend. You look at the stats/spreadsheets etc and Saints don't look far off.

But sometimes the best analysis you can do is what you see in front of you with your eyes and Saints look a poorly coached team. The KR game looks "close" on the scoresheet, but Saints were woeful and if KR had been on it, should have put a cricket score on them. Yes recruitment hasn't been the best, but still, that Saints team has some quality players in it. When the coach is playing one of the leagues best FB's at LF (where he's never played his entire career) in a derby, you know he's run out of ideas of how to fix it.

Not all of Saints problems are down to Wellens.

There are things going on that are out of Wellens control
