The Daddy Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Debeau Performance, a new sportswear apparel company owned by Derek Beaumont is now sponsoring Leigh Leopards. I actually think this a brilliant idea and I love the innovation and the fact that RL clubs/owners are branching out and looking to bring in income from outside the sport like aussie league clubs. My only question is, are funds provided to Leigh via Debeau counted as profit/turnover in the IMG gradings?

The Daddy Posted November 1 Author Posted November 1 Ok I see it's on the 2026 kit thread. I never read the kit threads. @John Drake Please could you lock or merge this thread?
thecoffeeman Posted November 1 Posted November 1 To be fair to the bloke, he'll know the deal inside and out, so there won't be much risk for him. Having been involved in several of these deals, they are relatively stable, so he'll know how much stock to order, what sizing, so on, so forth. However. It's very rugby league isn't it? A deal with a larger organisation may be slightly smaller in terms of revenue, but would bring wider benefits and more sales elsewhere via wider distribution channels, Would be interesting to know how it's funded - there is a lot of up front cost in deals like these. But great to see that they have got their social media team right behind the launch, 1

JohnM Posted November 2 Posted November 2 So Beaumont is sponsoring Beaumont? Obviously, that's why he was in China recently - to set up a TEMU shopfront. The New RFL: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad.

To answer your question, yes, but it's no different to the current status quo where owners will write off director loans as sponsorship to manipulate the finance pillar - DB previously with AB sundeck sponsorship, Matt Ellis with DIY kitchen sponsorship etc. 1

Strange thing to have an issue over to be honest. Talking about new kits and logos for RL teams seems a perfectly normal thing to do? 3
LeytherRob Posted November 3 Posted November 3 7 minutes ago, The Daddy said: That's not good then and it highlights the flaws with the IMG gradings process Yes, but this isn't new, DB openly pointed out the flaws a couple of years back and told everyone exactly what he was going to do. Going back to the thread topic, the kit manufacturing venture isn't about masking donations to the club, it's about building a business that will ease the clubs reliance on DB. That 6-figure sponsorship will be coming from the margins that Sports Hub Group(Reebok/Patrick) were taking for their cut. 2
phiggins Posted November 3 Posted November 3 15 minutes ago, The Daddy said: That's not good then and it highlights the flaws with the IMG gradings process The flaws with the IMG gradings process were highlighted over a year ago when Derek Beaumont openly announced that he would be converting loans to sponsorship to boost Leigh's score. At least this has more of a tangible transaction associated with it. 1

What's wrong with that? Leigh owed Derek money, now they don't. Leigh have benefited. Sure, Derek could pay a sponsorship bill to Leigh and then Leigh could send him the money back as repayment, in whole or part, of his loan. Comes to the same thing but would that make you happier ? "We'll sell you a seat .... but you'll only need the edge of it!"

In context of this conversation, I don't think this partnership exposes any loopholes, gaming of the system or whatever you want to call it, that hasn't been laid out in plain sight in the past. To be honest, there's one club that has completely undermined the finance scoring of the grading system this year, and it wasn't Leigh.
LeytherRob Posted November 3 Posted November 3 (edited) Whilst this is a thread on Debeau in general, it's worth pointing out for those that weren't already aware that this move was also made earlier this year for the matchday pyrotechnics, rather than renting from third parties, Debeau FX just purchased all the gear to provide favourable rates to Leigh (saves money) and also rents it out to other clubs/events (makes money). The plan will be the same for the kit, get a few champ clubs on board and any margins made just further reduce DB's net spend into the game, increasing the sustainability for him. Fascinating. Are we saying that Sports Hub Group took more than £100,000 from the deal previously?

Does all the cash he makes from this go to Leigh?
