The fact that we are instituting a new 4 year cycle for the Ashes, with the next one in three years, is so rugby league it hurts.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Aussies gaslighting us again:

“England has been crying out for this level of competition that they haven’t previously had in their own hemisphere."

Patting themselves on the back as though this is a new idea and something they've delivered.

In the 90s we had the Aussies/Kiwis in the UK for 5 of 10 years

In the 00s we had the Aussies /Kiwis in the UK for 9 of 10 years

In the 10's we had them in the UK for 5 of 10 years.

No but we have a timeline for a first draft of the terms of reference.

It’s a positive that at least it is being referenced as value adding.

I think in the near term the Ashes should also be in England in each 4 year cycle. The Pacific Champ is strong down under and we desperately need regular internationals in this country - I think the benefit is higher. 

If in a 4 year cycle we had a WC, Ashes Tour in England, NZ tour in England and then either Tonga/Samoa tour in England then I think that would be great. Supported by an annual mid season international against the winners of a prior year Euro A comp (likely France) and an end of season test series warm up match against France.

That does basically mean England never leave these shores really. Which is not unlike the 00's, but a bit one-dimensional.

It's a tough one. If we're sticking with the view that international rugby is crucial for growing the game's profile, we have to decide whether a home series Vs Samoa or Tonga, or England joining a 4 Nations down under, will do more for the game in the UK. 

As an existing RL fan I'd love to see the latter, but I worry that the early kick off times mean even fewer of the general public than normal would know it was happening. 

So probably staying at home is best for the next couple of cycles.

Those costs would absolutely be underwritten. 

Who do you recommend?

The sport hasn't developed international teams for decades outside of stumbling across heritage players.

Easy to say but very hard to do. France and Wales are not going to be strong enough to play more than a single test vs England here and there for the foreseeable future, so England's schedule for the next decade is going to be bound up with the Pacific nations one way or another.

Still, apparently, we just need to have wholesale emigration from Ireland into rugby league majority areas and have those adults have children and then in 25 years we can have a heritage team opponent.

Yes I know we are not a Pacific side but competitions should constantly look to evolve.

Badly, but with two full time professional teams funded to the tune of AUD$4m per year by the RFL.

Aussies gaslighting? That wasn’t anyone from the NRL you quoted Dave. That was the IRL Chair.

To be fair to the Australians, they certainly did their bit in the community throughout the tour.

You are right that this isn’t the first time England has had this level of competition, so the wording was pretty far off.

Six nations mate. I don’t know why the powers don’t see it fit for any one of their biannually announced “NEW INTERNATIONAL CYCLE”.

In reality, I don’t see much change from the calendar announced in 2023, so while it does have a headline of a “new calendar”, it’s simply a rejigged one with the same fixtures as penned in 2023.

In that announcement, The Ashes were scheduled for 2025 and 2028. The only thing that has changed from the announcement then is that England will now tour Aus in 2028, in lieu Australia answered England’s request to tour in 2025 instead of England touring in 2025.
