With the boredom of no Fev (or any rugby league) games to watch I watched a bit of the Luxembourg v Wales soccer world cup qualifier and started wondering what proportion of  eligible members of their populations make up their squad.

Started with the total population. Divided that by 2 (females don't play in men's matches!). Then used co-pilot AI to find out what proportion of populations in Europe are between 18 and 35 years old and got the answer that it is between 20 and 25%.

We decided to err on the generous side and used the 25% figure.

On the basis of an 18 man squad that gives the following results for England, Wales and Luxembourg.

Here are the results:

If you are English, male and between 18 and 35 you have a chance of about 1 in 400,000 of being in the squad.

If you are Welsh, male and between 18 and 35 you have a chance of about 1 in 22,000 of being in the squad.

If you are a Luxembourger, male and between 18 and 35 you have a chance of about 1 in 285 of being in the squad!!!

And if you turn up to Cas early for the Xmas friendly, you will be selected!

The populations of Luxembourg and Liechtenstein are almost the same so, even though I got which mini-state wrong, the calculations still apply.
