But we have proper rugby league people in charge this wasn't supposed to happen.

And Oldham were ready for SL a month ago???

Have they been gambling on getting into super league?

Lets sign lots of expensive players and not pay HMRC seems to be the default business plan for a lot of clubs. No doubt it'll be an administrative error.

Yep always administrative errors which cause players not to be paid too (not saying that's the case here but lots of talk of another club which is persistently late paying their staff)

Oldham Rugby League Club would like to provide an update to supporters following recent reports of a winding-up order issued against the club.

The order relates to a historic debt of which the club was previously unaware. This matter has now been resolved, and the petition will be dismissed.

Boom and bust. Do people not learn from history?

But there was no boom. Promotion was to be decided though gradings and Oldham were a long way from getting in that way. Never understood why the big money signings who made towards the end of the year. They were having a decent first season back in the champ

Really hope this is just an amateurish blunder. A strong Oldham is such an asset for RL

"The order relates to a historic debt of which the club was previously unaware."

Unlikely that this came out of the blue, HMRC will have kept in club in touch of what was happening, and how it would transpire if they ingored those requests.

Still, it's been attended to, so all's well that ends well.

This Due Diligence malarkey.Does anyone bother with such nonsense in rugby league before a club is taken over?

No reserves, but resilience, persistence and determination are omnipotent.

One question, how can the club be unaware of an historic debt to HMRC, that just doesn’t ring true, unless of course nobody has done the books for years, even then, when the club was taken over surely all the financials were looked into.

Clearly HMRC haven’t been in touch about this debt if this is the first they have heard 🤔

Yep, obviously they’ve never had any letters about it or penalty notices. And it clearly wasn’t visible on their online account on the HMRC portal which every business this size is required to have. And they’ve never wondered why they kept getting charged interest by HMRC. Their accountants must also have turned a blind eye to the fact that the liabilities in the accounts didn’t balance to the HMRC online account. There are liars, damned liars and RL clubs who owe HMRC.

Given that it doesn’t appear to have been advertised in the London Gazette it appears that City AM picked it up as soon as it was filed.

Fair play to their reporters, they obviously have contacts within the Courts system looking for stuff like this.

Well done to Oldham for sorting it out so quick. Contrary to what we saw with Salford, HMRC are generally brutal at collecting debts. If they think you have the money, they go straight for the Winding up petition.
