Big crowd and hopefully no serious injuries…all we could hope for really. Back to the bread and butter next week.

It looked good on the injury front. 100 % effort from the las. It was a privilege to watch that Wigan team.

Shame we couldn't get a small score on the Board, but the occasion was enjoyable and hope the lads weren't too downbeat afterwards.  It was always going to be a big score.  We need a new sponsor - a bloody good butchers - some of the Wigan lads are twice our size.

So pleased for Andy Mazey tonight.   Seeing the highest gate for 27 years will help the club this season and take some pressure off him.  Plenty of first timers sat around me...hope some come back

Do they have different off side rules in Super League ? I don’t think Wigan were onside all the game. They’d jog back to almost where referee was then turn around and then run in for the tackle. When we were playing the ball they were half way into the tackle. I think the ref penalised them once for offside. He ticked the box once and that was it.

Agree - we said the same thing on offside.  We were convinced of a couple of forward passes too.  But if we are honest, it didn't make a difference.   The Wigan line was solid and disciplined.  We were slow in comparison

Totally agree. Wigan offside a lot, and their ''flat passes''  were a thing of beauty 🤣

We defended with plenty of heart. Nobody gave up at any point. We didn’t make the best use of what little ball we managed to get. I think we drew the fight.

I think we won the fight on points ! There is no shortage of Heart and togetherness in that team. My best  moment was Joe Hickey facing up to one of the biggest Wigan forwards.

I was shouting for the two but fair play the lads had the confidence to go for try which  says a lot about their character.

Really proud of the effort yesterday, a great showpiece and memorable afternoon.

Wigan were bigger, faster and stronger in every department…..but it didn’t stop us having a real good dig….really proud.

Whilst the ref had no bearing on the scoreline there wasn’t any common sense or compensation in some of his decisions, the six again rule is becoming baffling, the penalty after the ‘fight’ went against us, but it was Ellis who came flying in to kick it all off. Not using any of this as excuses but a world class team like Wigan don’t need any help.

We used to play Wigan every couple of years or so going back to Regal Trophy and Lancashire cup days and whilst always well beaten on most occasions it was never 80 odd; just shows the gulf between top end SL and our level. Wigan were classy from start to  finish, every credit to them….what price they lift the cup in May, I hope they do.

A great afternoon and hopefully some cash in the bank

i really hope some of the floating fans come back….we’ve got a good thing here at Hornets at the moment and the club deserves our support

That’s a thing you notice about the really top sides. They are great at the little forward pass. Nothing more than about a foot forward each time but when the ball has gone through three or four pairs of hands it all adds up. Really hard for any ref to spot and the touch judges all have their eyes painted on these days.

Totally agree plus the Ogden family must feel very good with both clubs having 4,000+ crowds so thanks go to them for their efforts . Also a great effort by the Hornets directors and staff for promoting the occasion. I thought Nsemba was outstanding and back to his best.Wigan supporters where class and their comments about Hornets where all positive. Tricky one this Sunday , Keighley will be no pushovers.

What a wonderful day yesterday, pubs busy with both sets of fans, the streets around Spotland busy with fans and traffic heading up to the stadium, the atmosphere fantastic.

Great to see some new and old faces in the Hornets end and a decent showing from the travelling Pie Eaters, who were noisy and seemed to be having the crack with our players behind the sticks.

I thought we matched them physically, and that lasted 80 minutes. What a great effort from the much smaller stature Hornets team. Credit must go to the coaching staff for getting the lads in that condition. You could see at Swinton away that we had fitness and an intensity about us this season.

Amazing to see Wigan in the flesh up close at Spotland and delivered a pretty polished performance, which will see them turn over the majority of SL teams this season coming.

I have to agree regarding the ref, whilst he had no bearing on the result the word used by me and others was common sense, he took no compensation in ability, speed or fitness and refused to step down from refereeing at SL levels. Lots of flat (being polite) passes from Wigan and the outcome of the Kade Ellis, Issac Reid incident that sparked the melee started due to Kade rushing in was a real puzzler.

Wigan didn’t need any assistance from the man in the middle! All the same, Wigan are a classy outfit from players to coaching staff reading some of the before and after match comments this morning.

A crowd of over 4000 the biggest from 25+ years will help massively and well deserved to the hardworking board of Directors, we are really blessed in that department at the moment.

I managed to grab a word with Shaun Wane just as the full-time hooter was going, like everything about the Wigan club, he was full of compliments and didn’t mind having a laugh and chat as the hooter went.

A day to remember! Back to the bread-and-butter next week, lets back up that intensity and graft and put Keighley away, a tougher but more important game in my opinion, especially with a new coach and I have no doubt Keighley as a team will be looking to impress.

Onward Hornets Onward!

Correct - it was only 70-odd back in the day

Hornets can hold their hrad high after that game. THegave everthing and never took a backward step.

I totaly agree that the defence line for Wigan were off the mark at our play the ball. A few more offside penalties would have been justified. The fact tat we dont play a flat ball game at the first pass following a play the ball did not help us. By the time the first receiver got the ball the Wigan players were already on top of them.

Congratulations must go to the Hornets board for putting a great all round day on.

A big difference now compared to back in the Regal Trophy and Lancashire cup days is the full time to part time difference. Back in the day both teams were part time.  But, now Wigan are working on their fitness, strength, skills and plays full time, 5 days a week and have the finances to use sports science in their conditioning.  I've always felt that if it was a level playing field, regarding being full time, then these challenge cup results would be a hell of a lot closer.

I hope we are using the ticket purchasers as a marketing tool and offering discount for one of our many home games in the next 6 weeks...we are unbeaten in the league...joint top...what a great opportunity to get more folks coming to watch (and pay).

I was talking to Graham Starkey before the game and he told me that back in the day one season he played in Hornets beat Wigan home and away !

His memory playing tricks. The wins he is referring to were in consecutive seasons...won at wigan in 66-7 season but lost home game.Won home game in 67-8  but lost away game.

In 66-7 both hornets and wigan narrowly missed top 16 play offs Wigan were 17th and hornets 18th.
