Forgive me if this has been done before, but who are your club's one-season heroes? If you had to name players who had most impact across just a couple of dozen games for your team, even a whole side, who would it be? Likely a mix of young stars who moved on fast, or stars enjoying a swansong for feeder clubs? A mix of short stint overseas signings and the odd tragic injury tale for the biggest clubs?

Craig Walsh at Whitehaven. One brilliant season in 2004, in which he was awarded National League Player of the Year, but he didn't have the desire to sustain such heights either before or after 2004...

Wigan - Michael Dobson who came in when we were adrift at the bottom of the league and was fantastic and pivotal in us climbing up the table. He was just the calming, organising scrum half that we needed. Great goalkicker too. He only played 14 games that season but probably saved us from relegation.

Graham Appo was bang average for three seasons for Warrington, very very good for one (2003) where he scored 23 tries in 30 appearances.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Robbie McCormack's single season for Wigan in 1998.

He arrived with far less fanfare than the club's other imports of that era and contributed a whole lot more.

The first one that comes to mind for Hull is Matt Head. He came over mid season after Paul Cooke went to Hull KR. His knees were shot to pieces and he must have weighed 9 stone wet through but he was pure class, played in a dinner jacket. He only played a dozen games if that but based purely on talent I would say he was the best scrum half Hull have had in the Super League era.

Darren Fritz was pretty awesome during his one season at Wakey.

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as me.

I had completely forgotten about him but yes, he was a major Wigan player that 1998 season.

I may be misremembering this but I’m sure he had a major impact on Wigan’s Grand Final that year?

Paul Turner played only 12 games, plus 1 appearance as a sub, for Fev (in 2024), had five different half partners over those 12 games so never really got into a proper groove but boy was he fun to watch at times, I think if you'd put him in a good SL team he would have caused plenty of trouble at that level too. Ended up getting shoulder injury and returned to Australia shortly afterwards.

How about the King, or, if you prefer,  the Emperor of Lang Park in 83-84 season for Wakefield Trinity?

Aye, along with Radlinski apparently playing for nothing - what a joke - and signing Fielden whilst exceeded the salary cap but Uncle Maurice assured the RFL that everything was above board - until Wigan were deducted four points the following season for the breach! However, that was too late for Cas who were relegated that season.  Still rankles in Cas. But in fairness Dobson did make a decent contribution.

Anyway, putting the bitterness aside - no matter how much it still hurts - I would nominate Steve Robinson, an Aussie half back signed by Cas for the 1983/84 season.  A complete unknown who played 20 games and was a cracking player. Went on to play for St George and Easts.

If it rankles then it can only do so by purposely applying different standards to have 2 punishments for different seasons applied in the same season. If you want the 4 points deduction for 2006 applied for 2006 thats fine. That means the 2005 2 points deduction should apply in 2005 instead and Cas still get relegated.

A well constructed point.

But, I would argue that Radlinski - playing for nothing because of his unrequited love for Wigan .... cough, cough - plus the quite deliberate breaking of the salary cap when signing Fielden probably contributed to Wigan winning a game or two that they might have lost as those two players provided a massive boost to team moral at a crucial part of the season.

So, I would counter that without those two players Wigan could have been relegated.  Bottom line, Wigan cheated.

Not my club and not sure if they would qualify as “one season wonders” but I remember a couple of Leeds wingers from the early 2000’s who burst onto the scene then seemed to disappear without a trace being Leroy Rivett and Danny Williams.

Currently playing in the Queensland cup and maybe even on a development contract with a Queensland based NRL team?

Didn't Leroy Rivett score something like 4 trys in the 1999 CC Final against London? 🤔
