Hull have announced that John Cartwright will leave the club at the end of the season. This isn't entirely unexpected. He's got young grandchildren over there, and it was expected that Jed would leave, and John's contract is coming to an end. He's done a really good job imo and will leave the club in a miles better place than when he took it over.

His replacement hasn't been officially announced, but Hull Live are reporting that Steve McNamara is the man. If that's true I think I'd be quite happy with that. For a start he's local, so understands Rugby League in the city etc. But he's not an internal appointment so he still brings fresh eyes and ideas. He's also very experienced at all levels and around the world, and in general he has been pretty successful everywhere. Even the places where he received criticism, it has generally been realised after his departure that he wasn't doing such a bad job afterall.

What are people's thoughts?

That would be a very good appointment. McNamara did very well at Catalans, and will have played a part in Warrington's improvements this year.

Leaves the question of who will be Warrington's head coach next year. A lot assumed that Burgess would move on and McNamara take over there. Could be two high profile vacancies with KR also looking for a coach, will be interesting to see how they are filled and the knock on effect.

Well they've not given us much time to digest this have they!

Sad Cartwright is leaving. Has done a great job.

Happy McNamara is coming. Home town coach.

Never dull in Hull!

I see Shaw is already putting a slightly different slant on the McNamara approach to Dan Tomlinson. One saying an approach has been made and compensation will be due, while another is saying it's a done deal.

Dan and the club have a pretty good working relationship. He isn't right 100% of the time, but in general when he has a scoop like this it's because the club have told him.

Saddened to see Cartwright go.Hes been good.

Steve McNamara a good savvy appointment

I said soon as he left Catalan that Derek should have tied him diwn to a director of rugby position.

Hes doing brilliant at Wire.

Cartwright has been a saviour and a steadying hand for a club who were near rock-bottom.

McNamara is a very solid successor, if this is true.

He said in an interview that he wanted to carry on coaching, so he wasn't interested in a DoR position.

Happy enough with the McNamara appointment if true. As stated, an experienced coach in all aspects of the game who knows the local area.

Cartwright has been a great coach and it is a shame hes going but I think we all knew it was coming and it's understandable.

If McNamara leaves I’ll be disappointed, I was hoping he was the man to take over from Burgess when his contract expired. It beggars the question if he does leave who takes over after Burgess, because I think we’d be foolish to keep him longer than his 3 year contract.

2009 Warrington 25 Hudderfield 16

2010 Warrington 30 Leeds 6

2011 League Leaders Shield Winners

2012 Warrington 35 Leeds 18

Challenge cups and league leaders shields everywhere! We need more silver polish!

McNamara's an intelligent, open-minded and diligent guy. I think he'll do well.

I think it's an open secret if there is such a thing that Burgess is back off to Australia when his contract finishes or perhaps even before

I'd hate to have had him coaching my club but McNamara might do a competent job at Hull.

For clarity, despite the Hull Daily Mail's resident in-house Hull FC PR guy Dan spinning otherwise, Cartwright has been sacked and isn't happy about it. Both his wife and daughter are on the socials today saying how gutted the family is.

I think clubs should be allowed to change coaches if they're not happy with the direction of travel, sport is a harsh performance environment and we all know the deal, but honesty is sometimes useful when communicating. Based on the stuff I'm hearing, I can't see how Cartwright can realistically coach the team for the rest of the season. The club has clearly lined McNamara up behind the scenes in advance, nobody can be expected to work for the rest of the season after something like that.

I like him as a coach, he seems intelligent and puts good systems in place rather than just putting a team on the field.

But I do dislike his dour victim mentality - however I struggle to find a coach who isnt like that when they have a bad game, its pretty tiresome tbh.

I struggle with Burgess for the same reason. I know Tony Smith could be grumpy, but he was also very likeable.

Be absolutely clear - Cartwright has been dumped on. He's been sacked and the players are not happy either.

I hope he ensures they pay his full contract out.

I'm not impressed with how this is turning out. I like Cartwright. I don't understand how such a rash decision has been made. There's surely more to this than has been made out so far.

Yeh, i would wait and see what happens.

Something doesn't add up. Sacked but staying til the end of 26?

People on facebook and twitter saying they are is daughter and wife??

One thing, i think we can say about Cartwright. He doesn't seem to be the type that would let his women fight his battles on social media.

Rugby Union the only game in the world were the spectators handle the ball more than the players.
