Featherstone Rovers are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Hankins 

Steve played in the 1983 challenge cup final victory over Hull FC

Steve represented Featherstone Rovers 137 times

Our thoughts are with Steve’s  family. Loved ones and friends

Very sorry to hear this.

Steve represented Rovers tremendously well after signing from Dewsbury, and his role in creating the decisive try in the 1983 Cup Final is often forgotten. Bumped off Leuluai and Norton, offloaded to Gary Siddall and then received Siddall's own offload to feed David Hobbs.

I'v also got fond memories of arguably the best game he had in a Fev shirt at Wheldon Road in 1982 when Cas couldn't handle him all day.

Really sad to hear this. He was one of my favourite Dewsbury players in the time that he was with us - gave his all every match and even got knocked out by Artie Beetson if I remember correctly.

RIP Steve. Our Grandmothers were sisters so was always proud to have watched him play. Always hundred per cent and a very good robust forward. Thoughts are with his immediate family.

I can clearly remember the major incidents in that game, particularly his double involvement in that decisive try. However, my overriding (haunted?) memory is of him sucking on the sponge shortly after Peter Smith was nutted....

Great player one of our great pack of the 60s . Yes 1983 was his greatest highlight and his contribution was immense.

My memory of overall matches is limited but i shall  always remember his overall contribution to the team

Iirc we paid not only what was considered a large sum* at the time for a forward but also a Club record?

*£10k sticks in my mind.

Yes, that's correct. It was quoted as a club record transfer fee in the match programme of the time, without mentioning the figure.

Off the top of my head, I'm finding it hard to think of many forwards that we actually signed (ie from other clubs with a transfer fee involved) in, say, the 10 or 15 years prior to Hankins signing. For most of the 1970s for instance nearly all our players came from local amateur teams or graduates from the reserves. I remember it was a real event when we actually signed players from other teams - Keith Toohey, a goal-kicking centre from Batley, was one that didn't work out, whilst another goal-kicking centre, Steve Quinn from York, most certainly did.

But forwards? i can think of Mick Morgan, and one or 2 others who were in the twilight of their careers (Terry Clawson etc) but not many others in that era.

Ray Handscombe from Wakefield, although I'm not sure if we paid a fee.
