Veo Sports Cameras

I'm sure many people have seen these in amateur and junior RL. IMO they're an example of what the modern world does well and terribly at the same time.

It's basically a camera on a huge tripod that records the games in high-quality. Teams get to share it out and you can watch it back and analyse the game etc.

However, they also have lots of fancy features like giving stats on players and a system where it automatically tracks the run of play.

My lad's team played yesterday and got hammered. The coaches wanted them to watch it back before training and come with ideas of what they thought went wrong. However, there was one bright spark of a great try for our team in the corner scored by the fullback. 

After reliving enough of the game as we could manage, we fast-forwarded to the try and lo and behold the clever tracking system got confused and was facing the wrong end of the pitch so we couldn't see it!

Assuming you pointed it the right way it will record everything on the pitch, the tracking system just automatically selects the part of the pitch to show you for convenience. If you select interactive view (if viewing via a web browser probably an icon with four arrows on it at the bottom of the video under the timeline bar, click on that) then you can move the picture around to look at any bit of the pitch you want.

Whoa, I didn't buy it and I've no idea exactly how they work.

All I've seen is what the club sends (although my lads football team was similar) and it routinely will get distracted often by things like people running across the pitch. It's usually pretty funny tbh.

It wasn't yesterday when I'd rewatched a pretty terrible match only to miss the only decent bit!

Thanks for this, totally was unaware.

Turns out they had it set up terribly or it was confused. If I scan it around it includes way too much of the touchline and you can't see a whole section of the pitch. However, earlier in the game you could.

Who knows! Still couldn't barely see the one try.

From the sounds of it I would heavily suspect that someone didn't realise that it has two cameras in it either side of the arrow-head and at some point saw one of the cameras from the side and turned it thinking that camera needed to fully front on.

The getting distracted by other people on the pitch is just an inherent limitation really. It's hard to teach it which people to care about and which people don't. But you should be able to always direct it manually if need be.

As a side note the game is shown in fairly low resolution, but if you create a clip within the veo site itself then it will re-render it in a higher definition. So you get better results doing that if you want to see individual moments.

It's an excellent idea, but as a technology it still has quite a lot of creases that need ironing out.  I believe in a few years from now it will have improved greatly.

All too often it confuses other objects with the ball and the ball ends up being out of frame.  Some games I have seen were actually unwatchable (yes probably on the cheapest version), while I have seen some that were much better, but never without glitches/hiccups.

Yes, I was probably harsher than I meant to be. It's just I've sat on the sidelines and watched *numerous* sports teams give the role of sorting out their expensive tech investment to whichever coach remembers and/or player is starting on the bench - and then have footage that doesn't match what they thought they'd paid for.

Contrast that with the team on Saturday in the football - Herne Bay - who were live watching the game on their phones and controlling the camera as and when they needed to (bright. low coastal sun plays havoc with tracking autofocus). To the extent that at half time they'd already downloaded and clipped some footage so they could 'ask' the referee his motivation for not giving a red card to the Hastings goalie.

The second scenario sounds much worse.

My problem with Veos is that you can happily ##### about someone with noone around you and the Veo picks it up for everyone to hear later.

They're that kind of club. But it was an obvious red card and they were right to be a bit peeved.

I don't think people realise how sensitive microphones are full stop. Hastings have a guy with a video camera (I'd say this still works better than an auto but depends specifically what people are after) and for goal replays you can hear the normal voiced conversations of people in the crowd who are 20-30 yards away from the camera.

Been caught out myself. 

Our local club's VEO was out for a good portion of last season being fixed.

I did hear a story that when a team went to view what had been recorded all they saw was the touch judge all afternoon as the camera had follwed him as he had a bald head. Im not sure if true
