Spoke to a friend who plays in this level and he reckons a lot of the older players will retire as it’s not worth it for the money and I don’t think he’s wrong

A chance to blood young British players

I think this makes sense and is a much more manageable figure for all.

Should make things more even, it would however have stopped London on what they've done this year.

It'll be interesting if London replace anybody next year on how the relegated club will transition to such a lower cap straight away

I think a more sensible discussion needs to be had around cashed up clubs like London (and previously Leigh etc), who would walk the Championship whether there is a salary cap in place or not, and whether the charade of winning the Championship (or getting enough IMG) adds anything.

So a relegated club cannot keep the same squad, what happens to contracted players?

They have to find contracts at a different club or renegotiate their contracts to remain in the championship with their current club - like what happens most times a club has been relegated.

Simple really. Just have Super League contracts for players, and they won't be applicable if a club gets relegated, or if a club goes into liquidation.

Since the first couple of years of SL when relegated clubs became financial basket cases through having to honour contracts, all SL player contracts now have a clause that makes them null and void should their Club be 'relegated'.

It's ridiculous. How is it possible to operate with a 25 man squad on that? Waited for London to go up then lifted the drawbridge.

The clubs themselves asked for this, no?

This will be quite a big change for a number of clubs who will need to drop down to £250k based on revenue. It's sensible but will increase the already widening gap between Champ and Superleague

Wonder what is defined as revenue?

To add I am not sure this is good for players who will almost certainly all be shunted onto pay as you play contracts. Putting your body on the line without guaranteed income is a lot to ask of younger up and coming players or experienced players in their later years.

It's usually media+commercial+match day incomes. Going to be some creative accounting going on I am sure.

A side effect is that this will also impact the Challenge Cup early rounds - already a tough ask for those outside SL - which will become completely pointless.

At this stage given the numbers quoted? It isn’t a merged Championship anymore, it’s a merged League One

Worked well enough previously, until Leigh and Fev wanted it raising and then the middle 8s came in along with the SL cap for all. Was an entertaining and competitive league when the salary cap was c£400k back around 2010.

Agree that you'll see some of the older & better paid players retire however.

It's almost like it was the plan all along

And naturally generates a gap that is too large for any club to realistically bridge

It's going to create a bigger gap between Super League and the Championship. If anyone does come down it could well kill that club. Also for anyone with ambitions of Super League that gap will get bigger.

I agree with the salary cap, maybe this turns the Championship into a Queensland Cup style competition.

It is a small number.

I want professional Rugby League players to earn more, goodness knows they earn it.

But commercial realities kick in I guess.
