He’s done a great job with the NRL.

Tennis will be a different type of challenge for him. It’s a tiny shadow of what it was 40-50 years ago and huge numbers of tennis courts have closed down over that time period.

Sydney alone has probably lost a few thousand tennis courts this century.

Loss of interest in tennis, housing development, lack of investment etc. It’s a great case study of a sport slipping out of the mainstream due to a range of factors and shows that RL can never just assume it will always remain popular without continual hard work.

They said it mostly relates to the tv rights deal. Apparently media companies start making presentations tomorrow.

I don’t follow tennis at all but could it also be done to Australia having no top ranked players too?

I remember men’s players like pat rafter and Leighton Hewitt from the 90’s and the girl originally from the balkans who had a crazy bully dad from the early 2000’s and nobody else since then.

Interestingly PVL said at this press conference that any future tv rights must result in affordable access to RL for the fans and that it will be a key factor when deciding who gets the rights.

PVL seems to be devastated that Abdo is departing.

I had forgotten about that and probably the most important TV deal in the history of the NRL to date.

you’d definitely want to retain someone like Abdo during the vital late stages of negotiations and until the deal is over the line.

Abdo says that amongst other highlights, he’s really enjoyed watching his children play rugby league and attending grass roots matches, smelling the barbecue, and chatting to the other parents.

The press conference has also really shown how human and relatable PVL is. He’s not slick with his rhetoric, he’s emotional, he seems down to earth and he appears really genuine.

Difficult balancing act as you don’t want to put fans off the game by overpricing them but at the same time trying to get the most out of the media corporations.

Right on both points. I think PVL genuinely knows the value of having the product on either FTA or affordable streaming services. Its no good getting a 4bn deal if it then goes behind a paywall and the prices go up. I also think he was concerned that if the product is split up, you might get Origin behind one paywall and the finals series behind a different one. Having it available to all is what fuels growth and he knows that.

Abdo going is a massive loss for the game and for PVL personally. We are all going to miss him. They are talking about Ikin taking the role but I am not sure he is right. Of course the media are scouring Rugby League ranks for the replacement but I would like to see a fresh face and someone who is business savvy.

you’d like to think that the modern day job of NRL CEO is an attractive position for leading figures in the corporate and financial sectors.

Origin is on the federal government’s anti-siphoning list and can’t be hidden behind a paywall.

Since early 2000s... world number 7 Alex says "G'day mate". So does former world number 1 Ash and the ever popular anit hero Nick. Not exactly like the days of the 60s but no less prominant than the 90s and 00s you speak of.

In any case, the residential needs of public spaces and the maintenance costs of public tennis courts makes them an easy target for closure.

Most of all, this is a big loss to the NRL at a vital point of their broadcast negotiations. If anything, the broadcasters will use his imminent departure as leverage to pay less. His departure certainly won't lead to any increase at this late stage.

I doubt Ikin is in the running. He’s not qualified at all.

Yes  RU did go 100% behind a paywall and they have never recovered from it. Disaster.
