Content Creators and RL

Not sure how much is showing up on the various app feeds of everyone else, but my Instagram has had a lot of content creators come up seemingly having been invited to the cup final. The ones I have seen have tended to be London based "family/mum content" female creators - which is an interesting demographic to target. I'm not sure where it has come from - the RFL, Wigan, Saints, KR?

Seems like a good move to engage with these platforms, though it feels like it is just a start.

Honestly it is about time we started to lean more into content creators - we still need to get better at producing more content ourselves for people to react to on the internet, etc.

You see quite a few Americans react to various NRL clips but if you were to look for the equivalent Super League highlights you would struggle.

I recall Cole Anderson-James who is a content creator came down to the Broncos a few years ago and did a video with the team and he has only gotten bigger since then.

Definitely something the sport has to engage with. "Organic" content like this is what people see on their phones far more than blanket ads etc. It helps build hype around things.

Needs to be consistent though and pushing hard from the sport too.

I saw the Cole Anderson stuff it was great and a good spot from the club. Should try get him back.

To play devils advocate can the sport in this country even attract the bigger content creators? There are major levels when it comes to this. What size are the ones you are referring to @Tommygilf for example? Are these family/mum content creators actually off putting to ones that would actually attract a younger audience and seen as being a cool (or whatever the word is now) etc?

Its a massive subject and I am probably clueless on it beyond whatever I see on my feeds. I think we are all probably clueless when it comes to u20s generally and what appeals to them. I should perhaps ask my kids on this as whenever I speak to them I seem to be out of touch on everything!

There are thousands of content creators in the UK - obviously they all have various degrees of "fame" and influence - and RL wouldn't really be able to touch the biggest of them, 

Most content creators will lean to things they can relate to, which is why there are big content creators surrounding football as it is something everyone grew up loving - but there are definitely a lot of options out there.

I would say we are in a slightly harder position to attract some involvement compared to sports like football where anyone can try - we have to let people try other forms of RL as I sure most will have no interested in getting "smashed" training RL.

Honestly, you have to target the content creators that come from the regions around where the sport is known but you can definitely introduce it to others - I know "Big John" has come down to the Broncos and done content with us this season as an example, (and I think he did something with England RL for the ashes?). The more you get these people involved and then extend on it more.

It is definitely a slow process and isn't easy - but we have to create the content for these people to actually interact with.

Its different things I suppose and not all creators are going for the u20s market. There's plenty, in fact there's loads, aimed at younger and older adults. Its always been something that has been there, the format has just changed.

Due to the disparate nature of our media these days, the chances of someone seeing someone they deem to be uncool at a place (ie Mumsnet influencer) is unlikely because the algorithms just won't show them that content.

Like I say I've only really seen this on Instagram and they do seem to be that sort of mid 30s female influencer type. I would hope they have done more though and are looking at broader strategy with this going forwards not only for big events but for clubs in general.

I do watch a few football content creators on youtube and some clips on tiktok and it would be good to see more RL content, but I think one of the big drawbacks is there just aren't as many stories to tell in our sport. 

My favourite content creators are the ones who might visit a struggling league one club with a tumultuous history one week, then be at a Premier League game the next, then they're at a Norwegian match, then an Italian Serie B side with an interesting story.

In my opinion the problem with RL is we just don't have enough teams, enough variety and enough stories to tell to really generate interesting content on a regular basis.

We might get a few content creators who have an interest in other sports or that cover multiple sports showing up at big games which is a good thing, but in terms of regular content I feel like we'll always be lacking.

The NRL has super interesting content on a regular basis because they recognize the value of telling their stories. We don't need thousands of clubs across the world in Norway and lower divisions in Italy to tell stories

I do think there is something in this though. We do have plenty of interesting stories, but I dont think we are great at telling them. 

I find the whole 'local lad done good'a bit boring and small time.

Exactly. In Australia they don't worry about that at all. NRL stars are always getting into some sort of drama on field/off field. They create stories and look for them

There’s a channel on YouTube called RegenerationNationTV. They are an American couple who watch a lot of British comedy. They have already watched the Rob Burrow documentary. They have 387K subscribers. They would be worth approaching.

I wouldnt have a clue who the biggest creators were, but we do have that John Lebbon fella who used to play for Whitehaven and is always wearing Oxen RL gear in his videos - which sometimes get a couple of million views on FB.

You can just be old and miserable without putting it out into the world as well ya'know
