clubs not happy about turning the Queensland cup into a reserve grade competition similar to the NSW Cup I believe.

If the reasoning is the case as you say it is, it’s fascinating they thought it was anything but a reserve grade competition.

Fascinating further still that any existing NRL clubs expect they would be better off in a QLD breakaway.

Without having read the article and going off your comments alone, this sounds as ridiculous as the recent news of Shark Park being in its final season.

Should I really waste my time reading the article?

For once I agree with SP. Why would any NRL clubs want to break away when they have never had it so good, when the sport is expanding faster than many can cope with ? As for reserve grade, QLD Cup have always been reserve grade, what do they think being a feeder to NRL clubs means ?

This is just some QLD Cup teams though not anyone in the NRL.

The QLD Cup isn't as formal a set of reserve grade teams as the NSW cup is. Probably closer to what the Championship in England will look like next year.

It's the opposite, isn't it? The 4 Queensland NRL clubs want to enter their reserves in the Queensland Cup, the bigger QRL clubs are ok with it, the smaller ones aren't.

Most of the named clubs seem to have put out a denial today.

QLD Cup clubs don't see themselves as reserve grade.

They acknowledge that the NRL is the premium competition but they want to do their own thing and not always have to beat to the tune of the NRL drum.

The SANFL in the Aussie Rules is similar in attitude, or at least was.

I respect it to be fair. There are a lot of proud clubs who want to control their own destiny.

I think the dissenting Queensland cup sides value their independence within the current competition structure from the NRL.

as for whether you agree with the validity of the rumours and choose to read the article is entirely your choice being an adult.

Ive no interest in watching reserve grade footy. Queensland Cup teams are independent clubs with their own grounds, leagues clubs, playing and coaching staff and boards who have affiliations with NRL clubs.

On second viewing I think you are right.

talks of an expanded 18 team competition if the Queensland NRL clubs join.

Did you edit your opening post… I’m pretty sure you post originally stated that the 4 NRL clubs were included with those Qld Cup clubs in their dissatisfaction. That was the particular reason why the whole premise made no sense.

If the premise of the article is different to originally presented by the OP and more as @JonM puts it, then yes, I can definitely appreciate that they don’t want reserve Broncos, Dolphins, Titans and Cowboys in their competition.

Similar to how I would hate to see Widnes or the like playing in a competition with Bradford Reserves.

These things usually are about money but I also think the dissenting clubs value their independence.

I do think the parallels to what some people want to see with the Championship are uncanny. I can certainty see the concerns of the existing QRL clubs just as I can see the concerns of Championship clubs when it comes to ideas along these lines.
