Does anyone here have any knowledge about the NRLs non footballing assets. I understand they own hotels and have made other investments.

What do they own and what's the broader strategy?

There are other paywalled articles suggesting the NRL wants $1 billion in assets by 2034.

The strategy is to make as much money as possible.

Interesting strategy 🤔

This article from 2024 refers to their 4th and 5th hotel purchase. They want a return on investment better than parking it in a bank. The returns will increase how much money they can invest in the game well into the future.

This is a really great initiative and it's not something that's spoken about much on this side of the RL world.

In fact, what's stopping the RFL and even individual clubs from making these investments from outside the sport?

For example, there are several QLD & NSW Cup clubs that are cash rich from pokie clubs and land acquisition.

I've heard Grant Weschel the co owner of London Broncos refer to increasing revenues into the club. Are these the type of plays he's referring too?

Are there any laws that prevent UK clubs and the RFL from investing in these non sporting areas?

Discounting this latest purchase they`ve spent about $100m on the 5 hotels they`ve purchased so far, so I assume the balance of the $300m in current assets quoted is cash at bank, unless of course there has been some appreciation in value of the hotels already purchased, which may well be the case but certainly not that much.

It`s interesting that we`ve seen NRL Travel being promoted lately as well, how this ties in with their hotel purchases I don`t know, but maybe part of the larger strategy.

No laws. Except it frequently ends in tears.

Not sure if Broncos/GW and DL have purchased the flats the PNG lads live at in Staines.

The NRL have plenty of assets and they continue to grow them.

Several NRL Clubs are extremely wealthy such as the Broncos, Penrith, Dolphins, Roosters, Parramatta and Canterbury.

There is a lot of money in Rugby League in Australia.

The Canberra Raiders are doing ok. They have 5 social clubs and have previously invested in commercial real estate such as office buildings in Brisbane, warehouses and property developments such as townhouses and apartments.

This annual report from 2025 says they have over $40 million in assets. (This is small change compared to some clubs) https://www.raidersbelconnen.com.au/site/files/ul/data_text12/4262768.pdf

It's a little goldmine that place. Strategically located near to the entrance of the popular indoor market.

There's no way the RFL could afford to buy that. They cleaned themselves out buying some prime real estate in Bradford a few years back.

Would the NRL funding a new stadium in western Sydney for both the bulldogs and tigers be feasible?

NO!

Stadium ownership by a sport is often viewed as a poor investment in Australia. The NRL have invested in 5 hotels so far as a diversification strategy. Hotels are far more lucrative to the NRL as they can drive increased business by directing fans and players to their own properties.

NRL hotels are here

Ooh I know, I've also heard that it's apparently a lot less covered than one would think, if you were looking for a special place for you and a person to be private.

NRL assets include $110m in 5 hotels plus $150m in Digital Assets and the rest in cash total around $300m

The Sydney hotel at $100m would be on top of this.

Digital Assets include their Website NRL.Com, the NRL App and various digital fantasy tipping / games. The big digital streaming thing that they were developing under Todd Greenberg was sold to Nine I believe.

That was supposed to be a security policy for the future so that the game controlled its own media environment. But it was another thing that V'Landys surrendered in that disastrous 2020 renegotiation.

There is a separation between most of the leagues clubs and the NRL Clubs. The club profits are not under the management of the footy club for the wider majority.

One club where the two are linked is my Sharks. The opening of their main site is due before Christmas.

The Sharks have that site as realestate. They also own a (heritage listed I think) prominent ex bank or post office in Cronulla town centre and also purchased Kareela Golf Club as a bargain for the club to establish a second leagues club, home away from home while the main club was being redeveloped. That golf club was purchased for about $4.5m and is now worth about $8m.

I believe the Dolphins own a shopping precinct worth approx $800m.
