Huddersfield ground share

[Ramification]

There's lots of talk on the Huddersfield Town (not Giants) forum around the Giants ground sharing Rams stadium next season, and possibly beyond which would mean them upgrading the ground to SL standards.

Any truth in this?

Pretty sad state of affairs but a lot of the posts above with the smiley faces next to them are probably not too far from the truth.

Who remembers when Huddersfield and Sheffield 'amalgamated'? How long did the Sheffield appendage to the joint name last. Yes, Sheffield were reborn as a new entity, but not due to anything the amalgamated club contributed.

If we end up as a combined club with Huddersfield, or a feeder club for the same, that will be me out of it, for good. 

Super League decided a long time ago that they didn't need the poorer, lower echelon clubs. Now they realise we can find game time for their fringe players, provide them with a pick of upcoming talent and run their second team for them. Oh, and some of us have a nice ground, ripe for development to Super Standards.

Tell them all to get stuffed, and sort out their own liabilities.

If the rumours are true, on a practical level Huddersfield won't be going "home" anytime in the next 10 years, so let's call this for what it is, a takeover.

If that's the case there's some serious work to be done to attract spectators to Flair stadium for SL games, and calling them the Giants won't do it. A simple moniker may be the answer but a huge marketing push is needed for whatever this becomes.

Heres a suggestion !!

Amalgamate Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley and rename the club Kirklees.  Upgrade Mount Pleasant to Super League standards - leave Owl Lane as it stands.  Let Kirklees First Team play in Superleague at Mount Pleasant, and the reserve team play at Owl Lane.

When the RL revert to two divisions again below Super League we can then have a team in each division.

Alternatively, upgrade both grounds to SL standard and let the Super League team decide on match day which ground they want to use !!!

Lots of people jumping to negative conclusions based entirely upon rumour and speculation.

Whatever happens (and I don't know what it might be) would it be a better or worse outcome for our club? Are there no positives?

I think Rugby League in general always looks on the negative side of things, there are no positives....ever!

 

IF, and it is a big IF, Huddersfield play some games at Dewsbury, the revenue from Bars & Parking would be gratefully received by everyone at the Club. Lets be honest, we need this to happen!

The current Huddersfield Giants company was the old Sheffield Eagles company...

Entirely depends on the deal I guess. If we do a deal where Giants lease the stadium for 10 years and bring it up to super league standards with no other strings attached then great bit of business, as long as the pitch can stand it.

Huddersfield will want to play outside Huddersfield for the minimum time possible. Was it two seasons we played at Batley?

The West end of the ground could be developed- seem to remember Hull KR had temporary stands - to get to whatever level is deemed enough. 

Hopefully it could generate some useful income for us if this is what happens.

My main point is where are we placed if nothing changes and the Giants don't turn up on a white charger?

Running a facility like ours is extremely difficult given the limited income that we are able to generate from matches and other commercial endeavours. If some of that burden is alleviated by the Giants then it can only be a good thing for us.

The difficult decision is for them to make. Can they attract decent crowds to our ground whilst they are still looking for somewhere in Huddersfield to play? Add to that their current and possibly future options in Huddersfield are virtually zero and they are between a rock and a hard place.

One last point: Workington are moving to a new ground (eventually) being built for them and their soccer club. This will have a 5000 capacity, won't be anything fancy and has an estimated cost of £18M.

Guess the support will depend on how successful they are. If they are winning, they will come. If they don't, it might mean the end of their stay in SL.

Their stay in super dooper league is fast approaching its end anyway. The RL will want London up and need to send someone down.    Any team struggling on the field and lacking their own gaff would make a nice target for those soothsayers that invent the points at IMG.

They are pretty well guaranteed to retain their SL spot for 2027 if you understand the complexities of the IMG scores. It has very little to do with league position and London will still struggle to achieve an A grade.

People regularly cite "the RFL" as if there is some shadowy cabal ruling the game. In fact the RFL is the executive arm that does as the clubs, predominantly SL clubs, direct it to. "It" has no independent executive mandate or authority. (This is the key way in which the RFL differs from the NRL, by the way.)

Sorry to bring facts into the equation.

That's the point. Huddersfield leaving the town has an air of permanency about it, so the ramifications (no pun intended) of that make this more than a tactical short term move, more a strategic long term decision. So what is that long term choice that gets more bums on seats watching SL at Flair stadium?

Just to add that positions 13 and 14 in SL were not decided by IMG scores for 2026, it was a panel. If this approach is applied again, Huddersfield have a serious problem unless they have some secret weapon no-one knows about.
