I'm 39 and I recently started comparing myself now to what older blokes were doing at the same age.

Steve Menzies announced his retirement at 39.

Greg Davies started playing Mr Gilbert in The Inbetweeners at 39.

James May was 40 when he joined Top Gear.

That sort of thing.

When I was 39 I was struggling with walking one day, caught the foot of the messed up leg on a kerb and faceplanted right outside the grocery store. Was helped to my feet by a kindly pensioner. Proper dignity stripper that was at the time.

When I look exhausted during a gym circuit class young women have discreetly asked me if I'm ok.

I criticised a teenager who was causing mayhem in a young children's park and he replied with "###### off old c**t".

Someone at work mentioned Kylie Minogue and a young staff member had no idea who we were talking about.

I once got ID’d going into a nightclub in Manchester in my late 30s with some younger colleagues at work.

I was thinking to myself this is great as I handed over my driving licence to the female bouncer.

She looked at it, saw me smiling and cut me down straight away saying, “you’re getting too old for this type of thing!”

The kids claim everything you listen to sounds the same.

You stop not only keeping up with what younger people are into, you completely stop caring.

Before you know it somebody mentions something that everybody seemingly knows about but you've never even heard of it.

I really enjoy being able to dip in and out of stuff. Spotify, YouTube and TikTok all hurl things at me and I can just either like them or not like them. Last act I listened to a bunch of stuff from was Paula Carolina. No idea if they are remotely cool or how big they are but I did have the enjoyable brainworm of, "Hallo ich bin Otto, Otto Normal ..."

Meanwhile, I mostly listen to classical music radio so just serenely plough on ...

I do find people who slavishly try to stay up with the fashion and culture of people 30 years younger than them a bit odd.

I do find people who slavishly try to stay up with the fashion and culture of people 30 years younger than them a bit odd.

Must admit I find it a relief that I don’t need to keep up with the latest news especially about people or things I don’t care about.

I think it’s one of the great things about getting older that you can 100% explore your interests, hobbies without a second thought as to whether it’s ‘in’ or ‘cool’.

That strange need for validation you feel as a teen/20 something can be completely ignored and you can march to the beat of your own drummer within reason.

Yeh I'm not done an Alan Partridge and decided there was no good music made after 1988.

If I like a song, I've never been snobby about where it comes from. I love Eurovision and was in a pop band until my early 20s. There are good songs out now. I like the stuff Sombr is putting out for instance.

However, I very much have a default era which is mid 90s to probably mid 00s. Even my newer recommendations tend to be this style of music. One current band I like is the Lathums, and they are very much of this ilk.

The odd time I listen to music on the radio, I do default to 90s stations now or Radio X. I wouldn't even bother trying with more up to date.

Tbh the best thing that being a singer and then a pop singer gave me was that I've been like this since my late teens; if I like something I do it and don't care what people think.

To a lot of my peers, what I was doing was embarrassing but I enjoyed it. I then stopped caring if I thought for instance a Destiny's Child song was good or not. Ironically, at the time I had a real dislike for what I called indie heads for who music was all about credibility etc 

I'm not like this in all respects, I've always been very conservative about what clothes I wear and scared to try anything too out there.

Which brings me back to the thread, I suspect I might be starting to appear old as well based on my unchanging style of clothes...

The one I remember older folk saying from my youth was that you know you're getting old when the police start looking young.

On a recent trip, I got talking to a bloke and his 2 sons in a bar, the sons had paid for the trip as a 60th birthday present and it turns out one of the was a policeman. When I told him the above line he asked how old I though he was, turned out he was 30. I thought he was about 20 at most.

The good thing about not changing your fashion style is you’re either in vogue or making an edgy counter culture statement at all times depending on fashion trends of the day!  Haha

The end of Top of the Pops was when I stopped being generally aware of current music trends. I'm probably not alone in that, as even if you hated everything you heard one week, you'd still know what was big at the time. In fact, you could often bond with people over agreeing about the awfulness of the current #1 hit.

Not being a trend-follower, I have never flushed my love of music down that miserable self-denying drainhole of "there's no good music any more" or "it was better when I was young" and all that Tommy Saxondale guff. 

I am currently trawling through the apparently endless wave of new/newish female Japanese rock/metal bands who all seem astoundingly talented and full of energy. On top of that, YouTube's autoplay setting can take you to some interesting places if you give it time.
