RLWC Overseas TV Coverage

I know some were awaiting an update from IRL bosses. As always, I’m filled with very little faith they even know what’s going on!

Rumour (Forty20) is the RLWC 26 broadcaster will be ‘outside the current portfolio’ and will require a subscription.

In Australia. They are nothing to do with international rights.

Premier Sports just announced as having the rights for Asia and Canada.

Honestly, the World Cup needs boycotting.

It's the IRL's only property. It's a feedback loop that I'm sick of hearing. I only see three options:

•It goes poorly (but not poorly enough to kill off the IRL) so we see further consolidation to limp through to the next event.

• It's average. Frustratingly, nothing changes at all.

•It goes better than expected. We see some stuff ramp up for Four years but don't invest in anything and don't have any long term strategy and then the cycle starts again.

After 2013 we started seeing the game actually develop in New areas, even after 2017 which was seen as a failure there was still growth. Since about 2021 we've seen consolidation to the point we're back to the way it was pre-2013.

With those in power I don't see a point.

The trouble with the IRL is that it is grossly underfunded and the NRL and to an extent SL largely ignore it. I want the WC to be a brilliant success and I want that because Rugby League doesn't need any more failure or bad publicity. I think the NRL is going to end calling most of the shots anyway simply because it has the money and the people and the IRL does not.

We do seem to have an international board whose interest in international rugby is negligible.

I feel like our best possible outcome is lukewarm. We aren't going to have some kind of amazing breakthrough this year with a 10 team competition so that means at best we cover costs and they ###### away the profit on more weird working groups and sub-boards. 

It needs blowing up and starting again. I don't care if it's the Wild West for the next 5 - 10 years. The rankings are irrelevant. The IRL provides no support anyway. 

Something radical needs to happen or it's the same old same old.

It really is hard to muster up some excitement. Ticket sales look abysmal and in trying to force myself to think again about travelling over, I was reminded of the Pool B/C silliness that is asking either to be ridiculed or just misunderstood. It's been set up in a half-hearted way and that's what will be delivered. A real tragedy. A TV deal for the UK is the least of the issues.

I dont even really mind that we change structure. Im ok with not just following Football or RU, but why on earth do we seem to go out of our way to come up with the worst structure available?

I wouldn't be surprised to see the BBC cover the England games and the rest on Premier Sports over here.

Premier Sports would be great by me. We'd probably get full pre and post-match on there, even if it's the Australian coverage. I preferred it when they had the World Cup - although, disappointingly, they didn't show NZ v Tonga live back in 2017. It was on at the same time as a NZ soccer qualifier and they had that on.

From memory, and I could be wrong, when Premier had the 2013 WC, it was the first time we'd seen the basic coverage we now get on red buttons. We didnt used to get much more than cameras and a couple of commentators.

And they didn't show one of the 2008 semi finals live when they promised every match would be.

It was 2013 that Premier had the coverage, 2008 was Sky.

What you say sounds familiar, but what didnt they show?
