Is Jack Welsby on his way to Wigan next season?

Not sure why Wigan would want him to be honest. A few years ago when he was at the top of his game I could understand, but with some of the players coming through at Wigan and making a name for themselves I doubt he'd improve them

Personally Welsby has lost pace and a little interest. 

Is that  because of the fiasco at Saints ? Possibly. Would Wigan want to thrown"the kitchen sink" to secure his signature.? Not a chance.

Wigan are a conveyor belt with youthful talent coming through. It is clear Welsby isn't happy so you could throw into the mix his agent getting involved.

If Field was to leave at the end of this season, which I've seen some very loose rumours about, I think the club would either get French to work hard on his fitness, move him to fullback and use it as an opportunity to get Farrimond a starting shirt (with Hodkinson backing up French) or they would give Hodkinson a chance and use the cap space elsewhere. 

I still think there is a top quality player in Welsby but he does need a move IMO to freshen him up. I think he should look to get over to the NRL and even if that is as a utility player, I'd back him to get a starting spot in time. He's a far better player than some guys who get a regular start in the NRL.

Do you even read the stuff you post? He's under contract next year and in yesterday's M&M interview said he would be going nowhere before the end of his contract.

Newcastle had the same conversation with Alexander Isak last season.

Wigan don't need Welsby. 

 

If there was a conversation say Olly Ashall - Bott may be up to a move to Wigan but he's under contract till end of 2027 then I'd pay a release clause fee.

Pie in the sky yes but you see my point 

Young Olly is worth paying an exit fee for.

Saints wouldn’t be interested in Field, they’d be looking at someone like Farrell an OAP. His lack of serious injuries might put Saints off, especially if we sign bargain basement Jed the carthorse Cartwright.

100%. How many players from our game, union or soccer see out their full contract?  and only a fool would think otherwise.

I would say the majority of rugby league players see out their contracts.

I think there have been promising signs over the last few weeks that Welsby is beginning to emerge from his slump.

Wouldn't shock me if he moved on.

I agree, I think he's looking better. In the game against us, he looked a yard quicker and if he can just cut out one or two little errors he's making, he can get back in to a really good place. 

I think it's easy to forget how good his best level is/was. I saw some Wigan fans reacting to this (make believe) link saying they'd go nowhere near him, he's not good enough etc and I'd possibly agree if you're getting the version of the last 12 months or so but if he can get out of this slump and back to his best level, he is a brilliant player and one every club would want. 

When it comes to England conversations, I see names like OAB and Thewlis thrown about and I like the pair of them but neither are anywhere near the level of a Jack Welsby 'at his best' and from an England POV, we could really do with him getting back to that asap.

Welsby hasn't been at his best in almost 2 years, it is good he seems to be recovering a bit of his form and skill but he has been awful for quite awhile now.

Hope he keeps coming good, because a form Welsby is a fantastic player.

On that side note about others, OAB would be my mid-season 'merit' FB for England. I think he's been fabulous.

I agree but at least there have been some green shoots this past couple of weeks. I'd like to think he can get back to his best and I think England need that.

I agree with StandOffHalf above that OAB probably deserves a squad place (injury permitting) but I still think that's a fair downgrade on a Welsby at his best (even if it's an upgrade on the Welsby of 25 and 26 on the whole).

I honestly am fed up of remembering when Welsby was good, just because he has had a couple of weeks of having a couple of moments doesn't elevate him to what he was, he should be no where near this England squad and I was disappointed when I saw him selected in the initial list.

OAB is the in form FB for England this season by quite some distance. It may be a downgrade on what Welsby was previously but I don't think his ability two years ago means anything now unless he can actually get back to it.

Can't disagree with any of that. I don't remember too many players having a drop off like Welsby and coming back from it, to find their absolute best again but one can hope.

There is still a good chance that Welsby could be going to Wigan at the end of this year's regular season. If Leeds and Wakey keep up their form then Wigan will finish third and if Saints can turnaround their recent form they could still finish sixth . Wigan v Saints in the play-offs .
