Just finished watching one SL game and the standard of officiating (both reffing and touch judging) was poor.

I'm not questioning the integrity of the referees but I do think there is a consistent unconscious bias in favour of the established teams in Northern England and its been that way for some time.

I've witnessed it happen time and time again against London and i see it happening against the French teams, consistently.

There needs to be better accountability not just of the referees but the touch judges.

I don't think it's good enough right now. I don't know what the solution is but the UK game is not paying attention to the standard of refereeing.

How long have you had this paranoia?

It'll all be okay as soon as you've watched a match that isn't won by Wigan.

I think there was something in this in the early years of Catalan when they had French players who couldn't understand the English refs. I remember looking at cumulative penalty counts and they were almost always at the top of the table for most penalties conceded.

However... anyone who in recent years has braved the bear pit of the Gilbert Brutus would question whether they still get the short straw. More likely is that poorer performing teams just concede more and get more superficially  'unlucky' as they are more often defending and more often playing against the momentum of the game.

I remember McDermott complaining to the RFL when he was our head coach as we (London) were consistently given less penalties than those around us.

Before this thread gets punted:

I think there is always some element of unconscious bias towards the better team, did the better team drop it or did the worse team rip it out, without clear evidence I'd expect a ref to go for the former more than the latter. But often what is seen as malice is more likely to be incompetence.

There is also the unconscious bias that most fans have, particularly in the moment, that they see poor decisions against them as being worse than the poor decisions that go for them, so the feeling of being a victim of these decisions is worse than the reality.

Legitimate discussion about the officiating is fine, but how do we account for the paranoia, the moaning, the constant whining about the officials' decisions that have infected the forum.?

It's not easy to avoid this stuff when hoping to find comments about a particular game, only to find the thread descending into a bar-room brawl over some perceived referreing bias.

Q: When will we know that 14 clubs is working for Super League?

A. Before we can answer that, we need to know what the move was meant to achieve. Seemingly, no one knows,

Maybe the refereeing does need improving and it is a problem that needs addressing. Did you ever consider that?

Maybe the players need to stop putting their hands up after every tackle

How do we avoid those who don't read discussions about refereeing standards and just reply the same standard phrasing they always do.

Here's a thought. That may or may not be the case but I'm sure that there are other in more urgent need of improvement. In any case, not all posters - me included - are qualified to sit in judgement.  Why let a (misplaced) burning feeling of injustice take priority over actual discussion of the game irself.

Did anyone see the Panthers forward pass that was let go in the NRL last week, it was comical. If that had happened over here this forum would have exploded.

I've thought this to be the case for years but maybe just because I supported a perennial underdog? If we (Wakefield) can maintain our improved fortunes, hopefully we'll end up on the right side of the unconscious bias!

I agree that there is a lack of communication, explanation, and accountability.

I think there should be a press conference on Mondays posted to RFL socials where the Head of Referees explains decisions from the round just past - highlighting contentious ones that were correct and examples that were ruled on incorrectly.

I agree there is some bias at times, mostly with the historically more successful or big teams. A team that has a large fanbase and has decades of success will get more 50/50 calls throughout the season compered to less established teams. This problem isn't just in rugby I remember Sean Dyche complaining about ref favouritism when he was at Burnley.

However I don't know if there is any hard evidence to back this up and it could just be a feeling some fans have when they go up against the bigger clubs.

There’s an old video of Brian McDermott when he was Leeds coach complaining that Catalans get the most penalties in the league and when he was at London they got the least

Did you ever consider that your reflections might just be the same as many other fans who thought referees were against them?

Without hard and unquestionable data, this is impossible to prove. The data sample is too small and nearly every fan feels his club is hard done by.

Then there is the age old problem of self-selection bias once you think you've noticed a problem.

I think this is the sort of thing that sounds great in principle, but would probably cause just as many problems. A bit like video referees really.

When they were brought in in 1995 nobody could have imagined that there would be many issues with them.

There'd be contentious decisions, the referees would stick to their interpretation, and everybody would cry stitch up.

Quick question: do you think there is a single period in the 130 odd years of RL where the fans have gone 'you know what refereeing has been great and fair this year'.

I seem to remember many years ago a certain Steve Ganson getting applauded off the field by the Bulls fans at Odsal, he looked shocked, we never got an overly good game from him again!

I'm not calling for apologies. There will always be mistakes.

I think a 15-minute presentation would lay out how the game is being seen by officials, and would improve transparency.

I was disappointed when the NRL did away with Annesley's weekly presentation. I think it was a regressive decision.

Just a personal viewpoint from the TO games. I think the TO home games except one have been very well reffed.  The one exception was the ref being too pedantic for both teams and thus spoiling a good contest. If you are wondering, I have now watched two live games with the lady ref, one in the SL and the other last season in the Championship and both times she has been excellent. Are there any more lady officials in the pipeline ? IMO the Captains Challenge is hindering the flow of the game for both players and officials. The game was more fun before its inception.
