At the end of the late Triassic era on Earth, when the world was made up of one supercontinent we call Pangea, the relations of crocodiles were the dominant force on land, not the dinosaurs who were quite small at that point.

The dinosaurs were really just starting out in evolutionary terms and in modern palaeontology we don’t really know why, after the huge extinction event when Pangea started to break up, the dinosaurs became so big and dominant.

Old theories from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s have been rubbished now and there really isn’t a satisfactory answer to it even with the help of modern science.

My favourite fun fact is on a dinosaur timeline; tyrannosaurus rex lived nearer in time to present day than when the stegosaurus lived.

From a recent episode of The Rest is Science.

The scale of the universe stretches from the Planck length, the smallest scale physics can describe, to the observable universe, the largest thing we can see.

Travel inward from one and outward from the other by powers of ten and they meet at something astonishingly familiar: the size of a human egg cell.

Which reminded me of this.
