If a ball goes between the posts for a try, it automatically scores 2 points without a conversion.

What do you think about this supposition?

Players would just run outside the posts and score four points.

I mean 'He's a poor lad' is one of our sport's most famous moments which wouldn't exist with this rule so...

So no.

I think that they 1 minute allowed for a shot at goal should be less the nearer you are to the posts so the full 60 seconds if you score within 10m of touch, then only 50 seconds for the next 10m inwards etc

I think he means if the ball is put down between posts then no need to have a conversation,  the 2pts is added automatically

I see.

So does the tryscorer score six for such a try or is two points credited to the nominated kicker?

Sledgehammer to crack a nut. If you really think that kickers need to hurry up, make them take a drop kick but the truth is that it's fine as it is

I can see if a team is 12pts behind with 5 minutes left then aiming to put the ball down between posts and getting a conversion awarded automatically would be useful, speed up the restart. What would the defending team do? Pack the centre and leave space out wide?

It will save very little time. Just my un scientific opinion but I would guess 80 % of trys are delayed for VR conformation, scoring under the posts would still go through that process.

Well, if we're talking game time, the click would be stopped for the VR.

Great theory and as such, this idea is of no benefit.

Can't wait to see Aaron Moore as the video ref spending 5 minutes deliberating whether the ball was put down an inch outside the line of the posts or not.

The ball would have to be carried between the posts before the try is scored. That’s easy to determine.

Well that wasn't specified. So what happens when a winger crosses in the corner and then runs it under the posts before grounding? Are you still going to make them kick from bang in front and not award the 6 point try?

(Besides, it was my attempt at humour, I wasn't really being serious)

I thinks it’s an interesting idea but it doesn’t solve a problem.

So the ball could be grounded out by the touch in goal line? Interesting.

I remember at the Auckland Nines (remember them?) that they used to have a Bonus Zone behind the posts - the 'Garden of Eden' as Vossy dubbed it. Marked in gold or some such, with touchdowns in that zone bringing an extra point (from memory). I think it was quite a fun innovation for a short-form jamboree, with teams looking to bring the ball around - they didn't have to run between the sticks.

To briefly answer this particular proposition: No, I would not be in favour of doing away with conversions. It would be a further undervaluing of the art of goal-kicking, in a sport that already treats it as an add-on and an annoyance to hurry along. An 'easy one' or 'gimme' from out in front can also serve to get a kicker's eye in for wind conditions and any peculiarities of the ground.

How about this for an idea.

After a try, the scoring team can decide to attempt a conversion for 2 extra points or choose to restart the game at the point the conversion would have been taken with a new set of six.... trading the opportunity for the extra 2 points for possesion and field position.

It is nonsense but would be interesting to see what teams would do.

A team winning by 4 or less with a couple of mins left may well be better off keeping the ball close to the opposition line and wasting time rather than possibly losing possession from the kickoff and conceding 6.

Even at various times, say if you are well on top, a player in the sin bin or a conversion out wide to name a few, you could well be better off doing it too.

Some A grade / Elite Tag Rugby competitions also have a double points scoring box in the centre.

It made little difference for me when the Americans did it in MLR

O, I didn't know that.  The rule in MLR was exactly same as my supposition?

Yes as a "speed up the game" thing. I have no idea if its still in place because my interest in MLR is waning significantly. The league has much bigger problems.
