From “We’re Doomed” to “Maybe We’re Not?”

Walking out of Spotland after the Whitehaven game, I genuinely couldn’t see us winning another game for the rest of the season. Fast-forward 10 days and we’ve won two games in three days, both on the road.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I cannot weigh this team up!

Last night was as good as I’ve seen us play this season. Yes, we had our obligatory 15-minute spell after half-time where we seemingly decided to take our eye off the ball, but in all honesty, we never really looked in trouble against what I think was one of the poorest Dewsbury sides I’ve seen.

And the reason I say we never looked in trouble? It felt like we could score every time we got within 30 metres of their line. The Dewsbury tackling was, to put it kindly, generous. Jayden Day’s try on the full-time hooter summed it up perfectly — he basically strolled through unopposed to round off the evening.

I was a little worried at kick-off seeing the tiny-statured Paga at full-back, but he was superb. He barely put a foot wrong, took everything that came his way and kept flying the ball back at the Dewsbury defenders, constantly asking questions with his carries. My man of the match by a mile.

Jamie Dallimore wasn’t far behind. He kicked really well and spent most of the evening doing his best to wind the Dewsbury fans up, which, judging by the reaction, he thoroughly enjoyed! Jack Hansen was solid too, quietly doing his job and dropping those little passes off to the forwards as they came onto the ball.

Up front, Jayden Day, Ioane, Hatton — as usual — and the new kid from Warrington, Hackney, never shied away from the challenge. All four put in a proper shift.

A special mention too for Matty Unsworth. After suffering that horrible injury at Swinton in the first game of the season, he has looked really tidy on his return. He’s fearless in both attack and defence and is clearly not interested in bedding himself back into the side after that injury. He looks a very useful option in the centres.

And good to see Roby coming off the bench. He seems to speed everything up when he comes on and keeps things ticking over nicely.

Overall, I’d give the whole team an 8/10. There was plenty to like and, most importantly, a lot of players putting their hands up and showing some real character.

Another trip over to West Yorkshire on Sunday. Fingers crossed!

And a big well done to the coaching staff too. After some pretty poor performances in June and July, they somehow seem to have found a way of squeezing a bit more juice out of this bunch. Long may it continue.

Two wins in three days away from home. Who knows what’s going on anymore. I’ve officially stopped trying to work this team out!

First game I've managed to get to since the Widnes match, and I thoroughly enjoyed last night's win at Dewsbury.

There was plenty of grit, effort and just the right amount of mischief about us. In the end, we got the job done pretty comfortably. The Rams had a couple of decent spells and threatened at times, but overall we looked the more organised side. We handled both the conditions and the game plan well with the ball in hand. A few defensive lapses here and there, but on the whole it was a really solid away performance. The standout for me was mistakes were almost non existent, not many penalties against us, our completion rate must have been pretty high % wise.

Jordon Paga was excellent at full-back. He might not be the biggest bloke on the field, but you'd never know it. He barely put a foot wrong under the high ball and carried it back like a 6'2" back-rower. Dalimore was up to his usual tricks, but he controlled things well alongside Hansen, and Lewis Hatton was superb when he came off the bench. The new lads Chippendale and Hackney put in good stints. Considering we were without 1st team regulars in Flanigan, Nixon and Barrett we did very well.

I'm also a big fan of Roby. He gives us something a bit different through the middle when he comes on and complements the ever-reliable Whitmore really well.

One of the highlights of any away day is hearing the home crowd turn on the referee after about 20 minutes. To be honest, even wearing my Hornets-tinted glasses, I didn't think he was anywhere near as bad as some made out. Both sides seemed to think the offside line was more of a suggestion than a rule for most of the night!

All in all, a cracking evening. The league table is starting to look a lot healthier and one more win from the last two games would represent an excellent return to Championship rugby.

A few weeks ago, after that hiding at Newcastle or Sheffield , I did start to question the spirit and desire within the squad. But nobody could level that accusation after last night. The effort was outstanding, the attitude was spot on, and for long periods Hornets looked in control and on top throughout.

I liked the look of the Dewsbury No 2, caught everything thrown at him in back play and looked really dangerous coming forward, Nelmes got through a ton of work for them but other than a couple of spells Dews were second best, credit to Hornets for that

You will find Hunslet a much tougher test on Sunday but it should be a good game.

From a Dewsbury perspective Roby made a big impact when he came on - a bit like a closing pitcher does in baseball: seeing out what should be a comfortable win.

By the way, LE had the penalty count as 8-6 to Dewsbury, which baffles me somewhat. Did any of your fans keep a count?

I'm surprised at that penalty count, felt like the world (well the Rams fans) was against the ref in parts, just shows when the crowd gets on the refs back its not always backed up by data.....and believe me Hornets have had some god awful refs this season

I agree with most of the comments on here. I thought, barring Dewsbury's first try, we controlled the first half. We looked flat though early in the second half but we kicked back into life after they scored that second try of the second half.

I also thought that Whitmore looked much better back at 9, instead of 13. I also thought Syme had one of his best games for us.

The Dewsbury fans behind us were constantly moaning about Dalli and Hatto so they must have been doing something right
