I believe my club Widnes chose a while back not to have substantial insurance in place due to the costs, but choose to pay for private medical care if/when surgery is required on injured players.  I’ve not heard of players needing to fundraise for surgery themselves, until now.

I'm astonished players are agreeing to play this brutal sport without proper medical cover by their employers.

I'm more astonished that it's even legal to operate without appropriate medical cover for your employees.  It is, after all, an entirely forseeable risk in a sport of this nature.

I'm pretty sure it isn't. Potentially it's either lost earnings from work, or wanting treatment sooner than through a club provider. According to the replies it also hasn't been started by Lilley himself

Read the comments on Facebook from Lilley. It is for the operation. He had insurance in place for some loss of earnings. It also states the injury was from April.

What is the charity for that we had the round of fixtures about the other week?

Great question.

I thought it might be Rugby League Cares, but it seems to have been a well kept secret.

Yes it was Rugby League Cares

Someone asked him on FB if they could help and he said:  "unfortunately not with getting surgery. They have been working and helping me with my mental health and dealing with things."

So they are involved

A couple of years back, Sheffield would have just bypassed the medical advice and declared him fit to play.

Why do that when you could just be sneering towards a charity.

Luckily, nobody did that.
