Featherstone Rovers are interested in signing out-of-favour Toronto Wolfpack half-back Ryan Brierley as they look to assemble a squad capable of mounting a promotion push in 2019.
It has already been a strong week on the recruitment front for Featherstone, who have signed Leeds duo Josh Walters and Jack Ormondroyd on permanent deals. Both featured in Sunday’s victory against Batley Bulldogs.
And TotalRL has now learned that the Rovers are interested in bringing free-scoring half-back Brierley to the LD Nutrition Stadium – though a deal has not yet been agreed.
Toronto are understood to be open to letting Brierley – as well as other fringe players – leave. Last week, the Wolfpack agreed to loan forward Olsi Krasniqi to Championship rivals Bradford Bulls on an initial short-term deal.
And it appears Brierley now has interest from a second-tier side too. He was heavily instrumental in Leigh’s promotion-winning campaign from the division several years ago, while also being a pivotal part of Toronto’s foundation years as a club under ex-Centurions head coach Paul Rowley.
But with the Wolfpack recruiting heavily and aggressively in the off-season – with Joe Mellor among their big-name arrivals – Brierley’s route to first-team rugby has been blocked under new coach Brian McDermott.
And that has alerted Featherstone, who are interested in adding Brierley to their squad. TotalRL also understands they are in talks with a Super League club over the addition of another forward.
