Rugby League: A Critical History 1980-2013

FREE UK DELIVERY

1980 was such a memorable year for Rugby League. It was the year that Hull KR and Hull FC met at Wembley, the year that Wigan were relegated, the year that professional rugby in London was re-born, the year that saw Steve Gearin score one of the great Grand Final tries and it was the year that Arthur Beetson and a couple of unheralded 20-year-olds called Wally Lewis and Mal Meninga launched State of Origin as their Queensland side, regarded by everybody else as no-hopers, stunned New South Wales.

Every year since, Rugby League's players have continued to deliver, but under the surface the arguments continue to rage as Rugby League remains the most political of sports.

This book does much more than record the tries and the trophy gatherers.

It examines the key decisions that have been made along the way as the game, particularly in Britain, continues to search for its big breakthrough.

With a foreword by Garry Schofield OBE, the book examines the international scene from 1980, the domestic games in Britain and Australia as well as comprehensive histories of Australia's State of Origin and the highly coveted Golden Boot award.

The author has also compiled a list of the best 100 players from the last 33 years and there is a full statistical wrap up of all Great Britain and England internationals, all the major cup finals, award winners and world XIIIs.

The phenomenal rise of Rugby League in pre-war France and its scandalous obliteration by the collaborationist Vichy government qualifies as one of the greatest stories never told. Corruption, brutality and shamateurism had plagued the world of orthodox rugby when Rugby League made its first appearance across the Channel, bringing with it open professionalism and a new, dynamic sporting spectacle which delighted the public. Only six seasons later le rugby à treize , the troublesome upstart, was wiped out by a conspiracy which counts as one of the most extreme examples of one sport¹s hostility towards another. A victim of the shadowy rugby union figures who stalked the newly-opened corridors of power at Vichy, Rugby League suffered a scandalous abuse of authority which has had repercussions up to the present day.

All Blacks to All Golds

NOW ONLY £5.99

In 1907, a team of New Zealand rugby players, who later came to be known with pride as the `All Golds', embarked upon a five month tour of England and Wales. Reviled by the establishment, both at home and abroad, the tourists were men ahead of their time - pioneers - men brave enough to be New Zealand's trail-blazers, in the drive towards the kind of fair treatment (already enjoyed by cricketers of their day) that our present day rugby players of both codes now take for granted. This is their story.
