Gavet ready for Giants’ exit

By AARON BOWER

James Gavet is the latest Huddersfield Giants player who could be facing a potential exit from the club, after rival Super League clubs were offered his services as new coach Ian Watson continues to try and shake up his squad.

Last week, Giants duo Suaia Matagi and Jordan Turner departed for Castleford Tigers within a matter of days, giving Watson valuable breathing space on the salary cap as he looks to put his stamp on the Huddersfield squad for 2021.

But the departures may not end there, as League Express has learned that Gavet is another who has been offered to clubs to try and free up more room on the cap for Watson.

The 31-year-old only joined Huddersfield at the start of last season but, with Watson intent on doing business in the transfer market and mixing up the squad he is about to inherit, his name has been circulated to clubs as a possible transfer target.

League Express also understands that Watson has identified players from his former club Salford as potential targets should the Giants be willing to pay out transfer fees and sign some of the Red Devils’ stars who are under contract.

Luke Yates’ name has been mentioned as a possible target for Watson, but with the Australian having signed a new two-year contract to keep him at the AJ Bell Stadium until the end of the 2022 season, Huddersfield would have to pay a transfer fee for Yates’ services.

There is also no inclination Salford would be willing to sell a player who has impressed during his first season at the club, having signed from London Broncos at the end of last season.
