Salford recruits keen to leave their mark

New Salford signings Tom Gilmore and Olly Ashall-Bott say they have no interest in coming in to make up the numbers.

The duo have joined the club on short-term loans until the end of the season after Ian Watson decided to bolster his squad for the remainder of the season.

Both players have signed for Ottawa Aces next season. But despite not playing for their futures, both want to leave their mark on a competition they believe they have unfinished business with.

“I want to get back to Super League as soon as I can,” Gilmore said.

“I’ve met Ian Watson a few times and been close to joining the club, around the time when Greg Burke went over from Widnes.

“At the start when the opportunity came up I wasn’t even playing, but in the back of my head I knew if I gave a good impression it would give us a chance to play. I sort of knew there’d be an opportunity if they got through in the Challenge Cup, so I’m hoping that comes off.

“Every Rugby League player lives to play Super League and the quicker I get back the better. I just want to give a good account of myself. Everyone knows I’ve been injured a lot. You can say it’s bad luck, but I have to be accountable, I’ve just got to get a run of games.”

Injuries also hindered Ashall-Bott during his time in the top-flight with Widnes, but a pre-season operation has seen him make a full recovery.

“Every time you speak to me I’ve had a new injury,” he joked.

“Through my Widnes career I had a bulging disc that never got sorted, I had three or four epidurals that took the pain away but led to me pulling my hammies and stuff like that. I had an operation at the start of the year, had the discs removed and it has taken a lot of tension off my back. It has stopped all the pain. I was walking like an 80-year-old man before pre-season.

“I want to go play for Ottawa and see what that is about; it’s a new journey and a good opportunity.

“I want to prove myself at this level though. I’ve not had a crack at Super League regularly yet. If I can put a few games together I can show what I can do. Every time I’ve got close I’ve had a setback, but I’m ready to prove myself in my time here.”
