What I don’t understand is how the Bulls fans appear to be happy with the situation at Odsal, the pitch may now just meet minimum standards as to width but length and in goal areas are another thing and the proximity of the concrete barriers hardly make for a  good open expansive game. If you are content in watching from a distance a game played on a postage stamp, fine, but it’s not for me. I used to like going to Station Road at Swinton back in the day, that was a pitch that encouraged fast open rugby.

Trust me, nobody is happy with it, but there seems to be little alternative.

Just to clarify.  I prefer Wheldon Rd to Odsal if only because you're nearer to the action.  As for Fev it's the same but the local numpties have been putting a dampener on the welcome since the 80s.

As grounds they're both better.  The only comparable ###### ground is Belle Vue where you used get a worms eye view in the rain on crumbling terraces with awful toilets.   Ironic that they do something about it all when they get relegated.

But as far as IMG are concerned,  Odsal is fine.  Just clean your seat beforehand or bring a brolly.

The 80s? First time I was attacked at Post Office Road was in 1967. It's a very long standing tradition.

I have very fond memories of Sykes playing for London for many years - A great player, who I am always astonished when I still see him playing all these years later.

Has anyone played longer in the "professional" game then Sykes?

Neil Fox played in four decades, fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties. Not sure how long he played in total.

No it's not a new book lol, more so players that had it all but never hit the heights for a long period of time, with a big piece of that bring attitude.

Whilst having discussions either mates and 3 pop up.

    Jarrod Sammut

    Dane Chisholm

    Rangi Chase

All could have had long SL (in Sammuts case, which I didn't realise NRL) careers but between them have had dozens of clubs. Another with a Bulls connection is Karl Pryce. He was going toe to toe with Vainikolo in his pomp. At 6ft 6 could play hb with great awareness. (A world club challenge winning hb nonetheless).

You can add clubs or situations into the thread.

First time I saw Karl Pryce he was 17 and I was convinced he would become the best centre on the planet. I know people who know him well. Suffice to say, the kindest thing you can say about him is that he was a bit too laid back.

Put off Bohemian Rhapsody by the lukewarm reviews so went to see A Star Is Born instead.........big mistake , Bradley Cooper produced, directed, and starred in it and don`t we know it . Slow paced and he just simply growled and grizzled his way through it . One giant ego trip in my opinion , but then nearly 90% of people liked it on Rotten Tomatoes so what do i know .

The target audience for Bohemian Rhapsody is fans of the group and their music. This may sound obvious, but it seems to me that a lot of the critics aren't fans, and thus may be expecting something the movie never intended to offer. It's not a warts and all biopic, it's more a Freddie Mercury tribute. Clue: Executive Producers are Brian May and Roger Taylor. They were never going to approve anything which risked trashing their, and Freddie's, reputations.

    Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  6. I missed 'Newzoids', so have just had a watch on the ITVPlayer. I managed 8 minutes. Hard work it was, too.

It's all a bit tame, some of the voices are okay, some very poor and it wasn't particularly funny. Whoever played David Cameron seemed never to have actually heard him speak before.

I remember 'Spitting Image' and although it was always hit and miss, at least it hit now and then, and hit hard. Newzoids just seems a bit scared to have a real go. The puppet caricatures are also less vicious than Fluck & Law's ones.

It is more like 'DC Follies' than 'Spitting Image'.

I did wonder if the writers were frightened of causing controversy during the election campaign, but surely that's what political satire is all about? I've got it on series link so I'll give it another go, but it needs to improve massively.

I'm glad John D found it funny. As webmaster on here he certainly needs a sense of humour.

  7. Newzoids launched tonight following much fanfare heralding the 'new Spitting Image'. Can't say I was impressed.

The puppets are recognizable but the voices in the main could be anybody. And despite an absolute army of writers the programme was pretty much joke free.

    Anybody else see it?

  8. I mentioned to some friends last night that Albert Lee was playing at Saltaire. They'd never heard of him. I said he used to play with  Emmylou Harris and they'd never heard of her either.

Mind you, it's only tonight that I've learnt that he played with Clapton.

Albert's always been a bit under the radar because he hasn't had a hugely successful solo career. Rolling Stone magazine even managed to omit him from their top 100 guitarists, probably because the idiots who write it also hadn't heard of him.

He's known as the guitarist's guitarist, revered by the host of more famous players he's performed and recorded with over the past fifty-odd years. What he was doing playing a tiny social club in Saltaire I have no idea, I guess he just loves gigging.

  9. Albert's a great technician but I've often thought his playing lacks soul! He's the country equivalent of all those terribly tedious Metal guitar players like Eddie Van Halen. I'd still stand watching open mouthed mind!

Which is pretty much what I did for two hours last night.

Thing about Albert is that he is extremely versatile as well as technically brilliant. Over the years I've seen him with Clapton, the Everlys, Rhythm Kings and Hogan's Heroes, and he always looks supremely comfortable and to be having a great time. At 70 his powers seem undiminished, long may he continue.

  10. Bradford City are in the fourth division playoffs tonight.

I wouldn't be too disappointed if they won.

God, I must be going soft in my old age.

I almost never watch soccer, and watching this game reminds me why not. This is truly dire stuff, do people pay good money for this? Twenty minutes gone and the ball's been in the air for nineteen of them.

  11. Mrs D and I will be watching in a bar in downtown Kassiopi with a few bottles of Mythos and maybe the odd cocktail.

Not really bothered who wins. Maybe Wigan because they've been the best side over the season and haven't won it in living memory. Then again I'd quite like our new coach to join us with a Grand Final win behind him.

Either way, let's hope it's a cracking game. I see no reason why it wouldn't be.

  12. In the pub this afternoon celebrating an old mate's 60th when this news came through. I can't remember when I last felt such a sense of despair. How could this happen?

This just shouldn't happen. I feel so sad for him and his family, and can only imagine the darkness that must have driven him to it.

    R.I.P.

  13. January 2010 finds Brian Noble with a team of fewer than 10 players, playing in a town 100 miles from its home base and where there is little indigenous support and a negligible number of juvenile local rugby league players.

Financial constraints mean that he cannot pay transfer fees for players and cannot pay wages up to the full salary cap. He signs journeymen with no top-level international experience to play in Superleague but also continues the development of Welsh players via a link with the South Wales Scorpions, who are also starting from scratch at a new ground and under new ownership.

Young Welsh players such as Elliot Kear, Lloyd White, Ben Flower get some opportunity to play in Superleague that no other club would have offered them.

September 2010 finds the Crusaders in the playoffs, ahead of Bradford, Wakefield, Castleford, Catalans and London. The Scorpions finish sixth in Championship 1, ahead of Workington, London and Gateshead.

You're right ... after following up a career history of winning three Grand Finals and a Challenge Cup with Bradford, the saving Wigan from relegation with this kind of abject failure at Wrexham ... he must be a rubbish coach.

How many effing medals have you got?

Great post H, says it all. Nobby's the best British coach of the Super League era by a country mile.
