  4. Sean O’Loughlin has been awarded an OBE in The Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to Rugby League. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. O’Loughlin’s award follows on from his 19-year playing career and his two years so far as an Assistant Head Coach. The one-Club man had an illustrious playing career, playing 459 games and winning 10 major honours with Wigan. Revered by colleagues and opposition players with many pointing to him as one of the modern greats, O’Loughlin was one of the most respected, consistent and inspirational players of the Super League era and captain of both Club and Country. The Wigan Hall of Famer led the Club to its first major titles in eight years, winning the League Leaders’ Shield and the 2010 Super League Grand Final, before going on to win another eight major honours, including the 2013 double and the historic World Club Challenge title in 2017. He was also named in the Super League Dream Team a record seven times. On receiving an OBE, O’Loughlin said: “It’s a strange one for me. You never expect anything like that. It doesn’t enter your mind that you could get one. It does feel strange when I’ve done something I’ve enjoyed doing for so long. “This is something I’ve been awarded for being around for the amount of time I have. It’s never felt like a service, it’s me doing something I enjoy. It’s something I’ve loved doing.” On the invitation to Buckingham Palace to receive his OBE, he said: “I’ve seen pictures of other people doing it in the past and what the occasion is – it should be great and it’s something I look forward to doing. “When I received the letter, it had a Royal emblem on it. I thought it was a speeding ticket at first! It came as a bit of surprise.” Warriors Executive Director, Kris Radlinski, said: “Sean is such an unassuming superstar. He is admired by teammates and opponents alike. He has played Rugby League for Wigan to such a high standard for many years but the most impressive thing is the manner that he has gone about it. “He is a quality human being. Everybody wants him to be in their team and then everyone wants him to be their mate and have a beer with him. The balance of his career is admirable. To be finally recognised by the monarchy is such a fitting tribute to an all round great guy.” Wigan Head Coach, Matt Peet, said: “I’m very proud. It’s so fitting. We see him as a Wiganer and everything we want the Club to stand for – Sean epitomises it in his hard work but mainly his humility as an outstanding player and one of the best players in our Club’s existence. “He’s continuously the most humble man in the building and that’s why we love him. He’s just a top man and someone everyone in the Club can learn from and does learn from on a daily basis. He’s turned into a fine Coach as well. “I’m just glad he’s on our team, he deserves the accolade. It means everyone in the Club and in the game can celebrate a real positive role model for Rugby League.” Everyone at Wigan Warriors congratulates Sean on his award and thanks him for his services to the Club and Rugby League. 5. Tommy Leuluai reflects on Wigan’s win in the Betfred Challenge Cup Final.Leuluai: “They worked really hard so a huge thanks to the physio staff as it means it gave Matty an option to use me.”Watch the full interview on Wigan TV HERE. Tommy Leuluai focused on thanking Head Coach Matt Peet and the physio staff for their trust and hard work which allowed him to play a part in the success of the Betfred Challenge Cup Final on Saturday. The Club Captain played a pivotal role in the win as his long-range pass to Harry Smith set up the attacking play which led to Wigan’s 76th minute try from Liam Marshall to win the Final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Club Captain told Wigan TV: “They worked really hard so a huge thanks to the physio staff as it means it gave Matty an option to use me and I’m glad as he’s put a lot of trust in me. It was a tough call as I didn’t want to put the team into jeopardy but the role that Matty was thinking for me I thought i could do and he showed his trust which I’ll be forever grateful for. "I worked really hard, I have to thank the physio staff. Matty put a lot of trust in me." Tommy Leuluai explains how he got fit in time to play in #ChallengeCupFinal. Full interview https://t.co/X3BrP98qW7#WWRL #ChallengeCup pic.twitter.com/fI1CPbCv3F — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) June 1, 2022 “However, then he asked me to play half back which wasn’t in the plan and Harry Smith was fantastic from his composure to the key plays and I’m really happy for him. I expected to play the final quarter of the game but the injury to Cade meant I was on before half time. “I’m grateful to be part of the group and at my age, I savour all the moments. A few weeks ago the chance of even playing wasn’t in my mind and all the hard work allowed Matty to be able to pick me which again I’m very grateful that he trusted me and we got the result.” A 16-14 victory saw the Warriors lift the Challenge Cup for a record 20th time. Reflecting on the performance itself, Leuluai commented: “If I’m honest its possibly one of our worst performances of the year with errors aplenty but luckily we don’t have to pick it to bits as Harry came up with an amazing play at the end which Marshy [Marshall] finished off superbly and I was very proud of the group for their heart and desire.” Leuluai heaped further praise on Club Chairman Ian Lenagan: “I was very happy to be able to celebrate the trophy with Ian as he’s been my boss for most of my career and I have a huge respect for him and his family and what they’ve done to this Club.” On his Head Coach, Leuluai added: “Matty’s done a great job in bringing our families closer to the Club. I’ve been part of this Club for a long time and he’s done an amazing job at getting us all involved and in games like this it’s that togetherness that was vital in the final five minutes so huge praise goes to Matty on a truly fantastic job.” You can watch the post-match interview with Tommy on Wigan TV by clicking HERE. 7. Iain Thornley reflects on Wigan’s Challenge Cup victory on Saturday.Thornley: “It’s truly a great way to celebrate that achievement.”Watch the full interview on Wigan TV HERE. Iain Thornley reflected on an ‘absolutely unbelievable experience’ at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as one of the reasons why he returned to his hometown Club. Thornley was part of Wigan’s 16-14 win over Huddersfield Giants on Saturday as the Warriors lifted the Challenge Cup for a record 20th time. “It was an absolutely unbelievable experience,” he told Wigan TV. “Especially as the Final is back at Wembley next year so such an experience might never happen again and in the 150th year for Wigan, it’s truly a great way to celebrate that achievement.” Thornley was part of the last Wigan team to win the Challenge Cup in 2013. How it started: How it’s going: pic.twitter.com/ly2L8SkmNp — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) May 30, 2022 He said: “It’s a bit surreal, nine years ago I won it here at Wigan and the first year I’ve come back – winning it again was one of the reasons for returning to the Club for moments and memories like this.” Summarising the Final itself, Thornley said: “It was probably what you’d expect for a Final – everything up in the air and off the cuff and when things don’t go the right way it’s kind of just madness pretty much for the whole game. It was a case of everything and anything and in the 77th minute it was all worth it when we got that try. Thankfully we managed to do that and win the game.” Commenting on the knock he suffered during the game, the centre said with a smile: “I’d been unlucky this year and had a slight knock in the game with a knee hyperextension and a bit of a crunch but a couple of painkillers and strapping up and thankfully it was alright for the rest of the game.” You can watch the post-match interview with Iain on Wigan TV by clicking HERE. 11. Take a deeper dive into what it took for Wigan Warriors to claim Betfred Challenge Cup glory in a dramatic 16-14 win over Huddersfield Giants on Saturday, as the final was played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time. It was Wigan’s 20th success in the competition and first triumph since 2013. Harry Smith starred for Wigan in the halves as he led the way with eight points courtesy of his first-half try and two goals. The 22-year-old England Academy graduate also recorded an assist, the crucial kick for Liam Marshall‘s match-winning try. Marshall was one of three Wigan tryscorers, alongside Smith and star full back Jai Field, who shone with a game-leading seven tackle breaks and 155 metres. Bevan French impressed with an assist – for Field in the second half – and also clocked an eye catching 185 metres from 18 carries. But he wasn’t Wigan’s leading metre-maker on the day, that achievement went to John Bateman who made 186 metres from his 17 carries in an impressive 80-minute performance in the back row. 14. Matt Peet gave his thoughts after his side won the 2022 Challenge Cup Trophy.Peet: “We spoke all week that it couldn’t be the perfect game but we could have the perfect moment and that’s how it turned out.”FT | Wigan Warriors 16-14 Huddersfield Giants. Matt Peet gave his thoughts as he admitted it ‘hasn’t quite sunk in’ that his side ran out winners over Huddersfield Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to lift the Challenge Cup Trophy. “It certainly hasn’t sunk in but I’m looking forward to it sinking in,” Peet said. “I’m looking forward to the town, players, families and staff celebrating and enjoying the moment because they’ve worked very hard. We can speak about the game separately but as for how I feel right now – delighted, proud.” He added: “I think I can sit here really proud that I know people are happy, we’ve played a part in helping a lot of people have a good weekend, creating memories as supporters, families and friends. I can name so many people who have all contributed in their own certain way and brought so much energy – I can sit anywhere tonight and be equally happy.” THIS TEAM #WWRL pic.twitter.com/JNwCw6QTVW — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) May 28, 2022 Speaking on the achievement, the Warriors boss said: “I know that our team will belong in a moment in history, we watched that video the other day of our 150 years. It’s only really the teams that perform in the big occasions that get remembered properly. That moment, the end of the game is what people are going to remember, it doesn’t matter what happened before that. “We spoke all week that it couldn’t be the perfect game but we could have the perfect moment and that’s how it turned out.” On his Coaching team’s influence, Peet added: “Lee Briers and Sean O’Loughlin are having a massive effect on everyone. I think the work they do, it’s outstanding the way they put their training sessions together, game plans. Lee does a lot of kicking with Harry which I thought paid off today but I thought he defended tough as well.” Summarising, Peet said: “We stand on the shoulders of a lot of outstanding figures at Wigan. Maurice Lindsay is rightly being spoken about for what he did, he brought the Club to new heights and I think it’s poignant that we can do this. There’s lots of nice stories to come out of this game, our 150th year, our 20th trophy, Ian Lenegan’s 15th year, the recent passing of Maurice Lindsday. When I look up into the arena and I see Martin Offiah and Billy Boston, that was a surreal moment during the National Anthems.” The post Peet: Delighted and Proud appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. 16. Match Report as Wigan Warriors win the Betfred Challenge Cup.Scores from Harry Smith, Jai Field and Liam Marshall sealed the win in the Capital.FT | Wigan Warriors 16-14 Huddersfield Giants. Wigan Warriors came from behind in the closing 5 minutes to lift the Betfred Challenge Cup at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Matt Peet made two changes going into the final as Tommy Leuluai returned from injury to feature off the interchange bench whilst Kaide Ellis returned from a one-match suspension to also feature off the bench. Huddersfield got themselves into a 6-0 lead with an early penalty goal followed by a try from Ricky Leutele. Wigan got back level with a Harry Smith converted effort, but a score from Chris McQueen late in the opening forty allowed Giants back into the lead at the break. Wigan got back in front through Jai Field just after the restart before Huddersfield responded once more through Jermaine McGillvary, a fine effort from Liam Marshall sealed the victory though as Wigan lifted the Betfred Challenge Cup. Report Within a minute of kick off the Wigan fans were out of their seats as Cade Cust looked to have broken through in the middle of the park but it was pulled back by the referee for a penalty to Huddersfield, they opted for the penalty goal which was successfully converted by Tui Lolohea to put the Giants 2-0 up. Huddersfield went close again in the 9th minute as Innes Senior looked to be heading for the corner but a good tackle one-on-one from Bevan French forced his man to attempt an offload which went into touch to give Wigan the ball back. Huddersfield were handed back-to-back penalties close to the Wigan goal line and their persistent attack paid off as a pass out wide to Leutele saw the Centre muscle his way over for the first try of the game. The conversion attempt from Lolohea ricocheted back off the uprights but Huddersfield had the 6-0 lead approaching 20 minutes. Wigan had a great chance in the 24th minute, first Liam Farrell went on a run to get the Warriors into good territory before Harry Smith had a go, but was stopped just short. The kick on the last was collected by the Giants but great defence forced them back over the goal line for a dropout. From the drop out Wigan collected the ball and a Morgan Smithies offload allowed Harry Smith to race away for Wigan’s opening score, converting his own effort to level the playing field at 6-6. Chris McQueen got one back for the Giants in the 33rd minute, spotting a gap to go over and put Huddersfield back in front. The conversion attempt from Lolohea was short and the score was 10-6 going into the half time interval. Wigan burst into the second half as they scored almost immediately. Working their way upfield Thornley sent Bevan French away on the right wing, he raced towards the goal line before cutting a pass inside for Jai Field to finish off the move. Harry Smith made it two from two with the boot to nudge Wigan back into the lead. The Giants were hoping to draw things level once more as a penalty was awarded 40m out, Lolohea stepped up but his attempt was wide and it remained 12-10 in Wigan’s favour. Huddersfield swung the tie back in their favour as Jermaine McGillvary went over in the 58th minute, supporting Leroy Cudjoe to sneak in at the right corner. The conversion from Lolohea as wide once more to leave the score at 14-12 to the Giants with the final quarter approaching. Wigan were knocking on the door as they looked to try and get back in front in the tie, but despite their best efforts, Huddersfield were equal to the danger and the score remained as we entered the final 10 minutes. Jai Field had the fans out of their seats in the 72nd minute as he latched onto a loose ball on his own goal line to race away, but the full back could only make it to half way before his attempted offload went astray for Huddersfield to get back in possession. With the clock ticking down a moment of brilliance saw Harry Smith put a grubber kick through and it was inch perfect for Liam Marshall to collect and finish in the far corner, Smith couldn’t add the extras but it was enough to see Wigan to a 16-14 victory and crown them Challenge Cup Winners 2022! 19. We are going to go back into the photo archives for one last time as we relive our success in the competition. We look back on our most recent two wins at Wembley as we lifted the Challenge Cup Trophy in 2011 before going onto lift it in the double-winning year of 2013. In 2011, Wigan got the better of Leeds and can be remembered by a Tomkins to Tomkins pass in one of the fine Wembley tries. Our last Challenge Cup Trophy came in 2013 where we came away with a 16-0 win over Hull FC to take home the silverware. 2011 2011 Won (v Leeds, 28-18) (at Wembley Stadium). Next up, it’s 2002, where like the competition 20-years later, the event was on the road with the Challenge Cup Final played at Murrayfield, Edinburgh. 22. Assistant Coach, Lee Briers, gives his thoughts on the Challenge Cup having won it numerous times as a player and a Coach.Briers: “It’s not about us Coaches, it’s about the players making sure they go out and execute and express themselves on the biggest of stages.”See the Warriors in action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, tickets remain on sale online HERE until 3pm on Friday 27th May. Lee Briers spoke to wiganwarriors.com to talk all things Challenge Cup, his experiences as a player and a Coach in the competition and more! “As a player, the build-up was horrendous for me, I was a very nervous player,” he said. “I used to be sick ready for the game and I could never stop that whether I was playing against Wigan, whether I was playing against Swinton it didn’t matter I was always sick.” He added: “The Semi Finals I thought was always the worst time, I’d lost 5 Semi Finals prior to 2009, so I was sick every single morning leading up to the Semi Final, I didn’t sleep more than a few hours a night and when we finally won and got through to the final I was thinking ‘wow, I’ve got to go through that again.’” Briers explains that this all changed at Wembley in 2009, as he went on to win three Challenge Cups in 4-years: “When I was in the changing rooms at Wembley, it’s twenty-past two and I’m thinking right I’m ready to be sick, and I wasn’t, I wasn’t nervous. I thought ‘this is strange’, played the game and won it, unbelievable feeling to finally get that first win and it was one of the best feelings I’ve possibly ever had in the game. “In 2009 my son was mascot, which was great for our family. It’s something that we hold dear to our hearts and have really good memories of that. We beat Huddersfield that year too so hopefully we can do that again. To do it 2010 and get the Lance Todd Trophy, again I wasn’t nervous at all. Fantastic, winning that Lance Todd, in my eyes one of the biggest man of the match awards you can win in Rugby League, especially in this Country.” PICTURE BY VAUGHN RIDLEY/SWPIX.COM – Rugby League – Challenge Cup Final 2010 – Leeds v Warrington – Wembley Stadium, London, England – 28/08/10. He added: “We did it again in 2012, and it was fabulous. I went 13-years losing Finals and Semi Finals and then within the space of three years I had a back-to-back at Wembley, missed a year and then won it again. It was like public buses I suppose, none come and then they all come at once.” Looking back on why his nerves were different at Wembley, Briers explained: “I only ever realised when I finished playing Rugby and I reflected on my career. Why wasn’t I nervous at Wembley? Every time I’ve played with a Rugby ball since being 4-years old, any patch of grass where I lived in St Helens, it was always Wembley, we were trying to score that last try or drop goal to win at Wembley. Everything I did as a kid was always about being at Wembley, we didn’t have Grand Finals then.” He added: “I’m a big believer in the 10,000 hour rule – if you do something 10,000 times you master it and I’d definitely done it 10,000 times. So without knowing at the time, I’d already in my mind been there, done it, visualised it and executed it. That’s why I wasn’t nervous and I’m pretty certain about that.” Briers then reflected on how the Challenge Cup experience differs from being a player, to as a Coach: “It’s totally different. When you’re a player you’ve only really got to get yourself ready, as a Coach you make sure you’ve done all the preparation, you make sure you’ve practiced as well as you can do and we’ve got a really good Coaching group here. We’re all focused on one goal, it’s making sure that everything is clear, no confusion, the lads understand what it’s about, supporting them and giving them confidence.” Asked if the passion for the Cup is still as big as a Coach, Briers said: “Absolutely – probably more so. It’s great to win it as a player and you probably can’t replicate that but winning it as a Coach when you’ve executed a game plan which you set out to do is something where you get real joy. It’s not about us Coaches, it’s about the players making sure they go out and execute and express themselves on the biggest of stages.” The post Briers on Challenge Cup appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. Since then, you know that it’s only going to be a good weekend if you get a quality result and performance. All attention turns to that now, we’re very proud and it was a goal at the start of the year to take the town to one of the big games. “We’ve got to take that opportunity and play the game with no regrets. It was great to win a semi final, but it’ll be awful if we lose a final.” Read more from the Warriors boss ahead of Saturday’s game HERE.
