    • Match Report as Wigan Warriors defeated in golden point extra time against Hull KR in the Betfred Challenge Cup Semi Final.
    • The game ended level after a try from Jai Field and three goals from Harry Smith.
    • FT | Hull KR 11-10 Wigan Warriors.

Wigan Warriors Challenge Cup run came to an end after a golden point extra time defeat to Hull KR in the Betfred Challenge Cup Semi Finals.

Sunday saw Wigan compete in their 50th Challenge Cup Semi Final as a closely contested first half saw Wigan go in with the lead with tries from Jai Field with two goals from Harry Smith.

Wigan were reduced to 12-men at the start of the second half but extended their lead shortly afterwards before Hull KR levelled the game on the hour.

    Report

It was a blistering opening to the encounter as both sides went set-for-set but it was Hull KR who opened the scoring. A knock on at the play the ball for Wigan inside their own half gave KR a scrum from close range to shift the ball out to the right wing for Louis Senior to dive over in the corner. The effort wasn’t converted by Milnes and it was 4-0.

Wigan responded in the 23rd minute as Jai Field drew in the defence before cutting through a gap to dive in at the right corner. The touchline conversion from Harry Smith was perfect through the middle of the sticks to get Wigan in front for the first time in the game at 6-4.

Hull KR looked to be away on the half hour as Shaun Kenny-Dowall intercepted a pass on his own goal line to get past half way but Jai Field watched him all the way to bring the centre down, with KR unable to create anything from the rest of the set.

Hull KR threatened to retake the lead with repeat sets against the Wigan defensive line but the Warriors held firm to deny the Robins any further scores before being awarded a penalty for offside to take them upfield. A ball steal just short of half time saw Harry Smith shout for the tee, adding the extras to send Wigan in with an 8-4 lead at the interval.

Wigan were reduced to 12-men straight from half time as Joe Shorrocks was shown a red card after a tackle on Mikey Lewis.

Shortly afterwards Shaun Kenny-Dowall was sent to the sin bin after tackling Bevan French without the ball as the Warriors stand off chased a grubber kick to the in-goal. Harry Smith shouted for the kicking tee and the goal went in off the uprights to extend the Warriors’ lead.

Despite the one-man deficit the Warriors continued to work hard in defence to protect their lead but their defence was opened up just past the hour mark as a six again allowed KR into their half, Shaun Kenny-Dowall firing an offload out of a tackle on the left wing to see Ethan Ryan over. Schneider added the touchline conversion to level the scores with 15 minutes to go.

The Warriors attempted the drop goal with a set move with 5 minutes to go but the ball was charged down and Hull KR were back in possession, they couldn’t make the most of their set though as Wigan collected on the last to get back on the attack.

The game ended all square at 10-10 to see the game into golden point as Hull KR progressed to Wembley as Schneider added a drop goal in the 82nd minute.

    • Match Report as Wigan Warriors Women fell to defeat in the Semi-Final of the Challenge Cup against Leeds Rhinos Women.
    • The sides went into the break level after Beri Salihi’s try, before Leeds crossed twice in the second half to book their place at Wembley Stadium.
    • FT | Wigan Warriors 4-16 Leeds Rhinos Women.

Wigan Warriors Women were beaten 16-4 by Leeds Rhinos Women in the Semi-Final of the Challenge Cup at Headingley Stadium.

After an evenly contested first half, which saw the sides go into the break level after Beri Salihi’s try, the Rhinos scored two quickfire tries on the hour to book their place in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

    Report

An evenly contested opening 10 minutes was battled out at Headingley Stadium, as Wigan twice went close to taking the lead. First Anna Davies almost touched down Rachel Thompson’s grubber kick, before Mollie Jones went over but was denied due to a forward pass.

The Warriors were then forced into defending their own try line when Leeds came forward twice in quick succession. The Rhinos found themselves 10m out following a drop out, but the Cherry and Whites stood firm to hold Zoe Hornby up.

Leeds opened the scoring after 18 minutes when play was worked wide to Amy Hardcastle who burst free to touch down. The score remained 4-0 after Ruby Enright kicked the conversion attempt wide.

The Warriors responded instantly, and after a knock on from the Rhinos presented a repeat set 20m out, play was shipped to the left where Thompson was able to smartly offload to Salihi to score in the corner with 23 minutes on the clock.

The sides could not be separated at the interval, and after a strong start to the second half, the Warriors almost took the lead when Davies broke free on the right wing. However, the Rhinos scrambled well to deny the centre less than 10m out.

The score remained level until the hour when two tries in five minutes from the Rhinos saw the Warriors fall 14-4 behind. A well-timed pass set Caitlin Beevers up to sprint clear down the left wing to dive over first, before Hanna Butcher released Tara Moxon to go over in the opposite corner.

Despite Eloise Heyward adding a further two points from the tee with eight minutes to go, the Warriors remained spirited until the final as Leeds held onto their 16-4 advantage.

    • Jai Field looks ahead to Sunday’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR at Headingley Stadium.
    • Field: “We will be going into Sunday trying to replicate what we achieved last year. Every player wants to play in these big games, have those moments, and win trophies for the club.”
    • Watch the full interview with Jai Field on Wigan TV HERE.

Jai Field says Wigan Warriors will be aiming to ‘replicate’ last year’s Challenge Cup success when they face Hull KR in the semi-final at Headingley Stadium on Sunday.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s tie, Field said: “I’m looking forward to getting out there on Sunday as I was unfortunate not to play here earlier in the competition. Leeds really tested us that day, but the lads did a great job that day to get the win. It was nerve-racking, but definitely a great one.”

Reflecting on the Warriors victory over Warrington Wolves last time out, Field added: “It’s always good to play tough games going into these big matches. Warrington came out firing and we had our backs up against it. We needed to dig deep to get the result, but it definitely put us in good stead for Sunday.”

Speaking on Hull KR, Field said: “Hull KR have been great and what Willie [Peters] has done with them this year has been unreal. They compete really hard, they’re physical, and they play a great style. We will have to be on it for the full 80 minutes to beat them.”

On the prospect of retaining the Challenge Cup at Wembley Stadium next month, Field said: “We will be going into Sunday trying to replicate what we achieved last season. Every player wants to play in these big games, have those moments, and win trophies for the club.”

Field added: “It would be great to play at Wembley Stadium, but we can’t look too far ahead. The stakes are a lot higher now as teams are more desperate to get the win, and Hull KR have tested us the both times we have played them this season. We will have to be at our best to get the result.”

Speaking on the Challenge Cup, Field said: “We don’t have any knock out competition back in Australia – especially not on this scale. To be able to play in these big games is definitely what you want in your career.”

  4. The Sportsman have announced another massive day of Wheelchair Rugby League coverage for the latest ‘Magic’ Round on Sunday 30th July.

Gillingham, Kent, is the next stop for the Betfred Wheelchair Super League as the six sides hit the road again for the latest ‘Magic’ round on Sunday 30 July – and The Sportsman will be on hand to provide live and exclusive coverage of the event.

Current league leaders, Leeds Rhinos, suffered their first defeat of the season against London Roosters in the competition’s most recent round – and they’ll be looking to bounce back when they face Hull FC (KO 12.30pm.) The sides last met at Hull’s Allam Sports Centre in May, where the Rhinos were convincing 78-28 winners, with England international Josh Butler scoring an impressive five tries.

London Roosters versus Halifax Panthers is the day’s standout fixture (KO 2.30pm). The Roosters currently sit four points ahead of the reigning champions and defeated their opponents at Medway Park back in March. Led by England’s Rob Hawkins and including fellow World Cup winner Seb Bechara alongside French international Jeremy Bourson, the Panthers will be looking for revenge and a chance to close the gap at the top of the table.

Opening Medway Magic at 10.30am are Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves, in a contest that is likely to see England’s Adam Rigby and Jack Heggie face their new international teammate Tristan Norfolk.

As ever, Medway’s ‘Magic’ event is free to attend with local fans encouraged to sign up for tickets via the RFL website here. All the action from all three games will be shown live on The Sportsman’s Rugby League YouTube channel from 10.30am on Sunday.

    Magic Round fixtures:

    • Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves, K.O. 10:30am
    • Leeds Rhinos v Hull FC, K.O. 12:30pm
    • London Roosters v Halifax Panthers, 2:30pm

    • Mary Coleman spoke at Tuesday’s Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Semi Final press event.
    • Coleman: “It just feels as though we’re on an upwards trajectory – hopefully we’ll see some good things this weekend.”
    • Watch the full Semi Final preview on Wigan TV HERE.

Mary Coleman spoke ahead of an ‘exciting’ week for the Warriors Women who prepare to face Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup Semi Final at Headingley Stadium.

“It’s really exciting,” she said, “It’s nice to feel a part of it and the Challenge Cup is a really prestigious event – the chance to play at Wembley this year is exciting for the Women’s game so it’s a pleasure.”

Sunday’s fixture is a double-header as the Women face Leeds ahead of Wigan’s Challenge Cup game against Hull KR on the same turf: “These double-headers are great for Women’s Rugby League and great for the Challenge Cup. Our attendance records are growing each year, and being able to play before the men gives us the opportunity to show our skill and the level we are playing at – it’s such an exciting time and it’s all great for the growth of the Women’s game.

Mary-Coleman-Header-1024x594.jpgPhoto: Bryan Fowler. Mary Coleman races through the line in Wigan’s Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Quarter Final game against Huddersfield Giants at Robin Park Arena.

“We have a great connection with the Men’s side and last year we had a one Club training session which we have coming up again in a couple of weeks. We are one Club with a one Club mentality, we love to share the success the Men’s side have had for the club, but it would be great if we could follow in their footsteps and get that winning feeling ourselves.”

On the Semi Finals, Coleman said: “I love knock-out Rugby League, for me it’s more exciting because you have to put your all in for 80 minutes. I made my debut in the Challenge Cup last season but unfortunately we didn’t make it to the Quarters. This season we made it through the group stages, and followed that up with a strong performance in the last round so we are really excited to face Leeds in the Semi Finals this weekend.”

Looking at their opponents, Leeds, Coleman added: “The Rhinos are a really strong side, they have a good push and are particularly good at working together as a team when they make a break. We know it’s going to be a tough game, particularly after our last one but the recent result left us with a lot to take from it, both positive and negative so I think we’re ready for the fight and ready to push them this weekend.”

Mary-Coleman-Training-1024x594.jpgPhoto: Bryan Fowler. Mary Coleman in training for Wigan Warriors Women.

Finally, on the chance to potentially go on and play in a final at Wembley, she said: “I made my debut in a Challenge Cup game so to be able to get to a final, especially at Wembley, would be amazing.

“It’s really promising for the Women’s game to be able to play at such a big stadium, alongside the Men’s final and be able to get that kind of support. It is going to be a big game regardless of who is involved, the chance to play at a stadium of that prestige and environment does add pressure but it makes it all the more exciting and worth fighting for.”

  9. Wigan Warriors Community Foundation recently supported the Wigan Schools, North West Schools and National Champion Schools finals to celebrate the end of the school terms.

Following a busy year of delivery in local high schools with development officers, Wigan Warriors Community Foundation were pleased to support the end of term schools finals. It was great to see a variety of schools competing in finals with a huge amount of growth within schools rugby across the borough this academic year.

    Wigan Schools Finals

The Wigan & Leigh schools finals were held at Robin Park Arena on 26th June with Standish High and St Peter’s performing best across the five year groups.

    • Year 7 – The Year 7 final saw Bedford High of Leigh beat St Peter’s from Orrell.
    • Year 8 – Standish High ran out winners against Hawkley Hall in the Year 8 final.
    • Year 9 – Standish High were also victorious in the Year 9 group stage, as they beat St Mary’s.
    • Year 10 – St Peter’s of Orrell were the winners as they took on St John Fisher.
    • Year 11 – The highly anticipated Year 11 final saw St Peter’s also run out winners in a fantastic tie against Standish High.

RFL National Education Manager, Andrea Murray: “Thanks to the staff at Wigan Warriors Community Foundation for their support of our Education events throughout the 22/23 academic season. We rely on the work of our Club Foundations to increase the reach of the game and Wigan Warriors have again contributed to multiple competitions, assisting our wider growth strategy for the game in schools.”

    North West Schools Finals

Held at Orrell St James the North West Schools Finals were also another huge success and a huge congratulations goes to all participating teams.

    Boys

    • Year 7 – The Year 7 North West Schools Final was a repeat of the Wigan & Leigh Schools Y7 final, as Bedford High once again ran out winners against St Peter’s.
    • Year 7 Plate Final – In the plate final, Deanery were the winners as they overcame St John Fisher.
    • Year 8 Plate Final – In the Year 8 category, St Edmund Arrowsmith were the winners as they faced St Peter’s.
    • Year 9 – Standish High came out on top in the Year 9 Final.
    • Year 10 – St Peter’s, who won the Year 10 category in the Wigan & Leigh finals also added the North West title to their tally.

    Girls

    • Year 11 – St Peter’s were also victorious in the girls Year 11 final.

    National Champions Schools Finals

The last set of Finals were the National Champions Finals held at Kingston Park, Newcastle and broadcast Live on OurLeague. Leigh’s Bedford High will face Hull’s Archbishop Sentamu at Wembley Stadium ahead of the Challenge Cup Final on Saturday 12th August.

    • Year 9 – The Year 9 final saw Standish fly to 30-16 victory over Warrington’s Bridgewater High.
    • Year 10 – A thrilling Year 10 final saw St Peter’s put on a late rally to beat Castleford Academy. It was the Yorkshire team who though they’d stole the win late on but a penalty allowed St Peter’s to complete a late set with a try to steal a 14-12 win at the death.

Community Development Officer, Tom Marsh, said: “I think all the events have been a great success, Neil Ashton and Andrea Murray have done a great job on organising the events. The standard of the games over the Wigan Schools and the Champion Schools was amazing. From the Girls Y7’s who played first in the Champion Schools finals, to the Y10 Boys closing the event – all showed some great ability in the games.

“I would like to congratulate all the Wigan and Leigh schools who have taken part in all the events from the Emerging Schools 9’s to the Champion schools in Newcastle, they have all been a great success. I would again like to congratulate Neil Ashton, Andrea Murray, Andy Duncalf and Andy Unsworth on creating all of the amazing experiences for the pupils of Wigan and Leigh to take part in.

“I am looking forward to the next school year to hopefully see more Wigan and Leigh schools get some silverware but to also see players new to Rugby League taking part in festivals and joining Community Clubs on the back of this.”

    • Matt Peet looks ahead to Sunday’s Challenge Cup semi-final clash with Hull KR.
    • Peet: “We are Wigan which means you must aspire to be in these big games. The competition means so much to everyone at the club, it’s our story and it’s one we must build on.”
    • Hull KR v Wigan Warriors, Headingley Stadium, Sunday 23 July, 5pm.

Matt Peet spoke to the press at Headingley Stadium on Tuesday morning, ahead of Wigan Warriors’ Challenge Cup semi-final clash with Hull KR on Sunday.

The Warriors will be aiming to take one-step closer to retaining the Challenge Cup this weekend, after last season’s 16-14 victory over Huddersfield Giants at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking on the hunger to lift the trophy for a second successive year, Peet said: “Even if we hadn’t won the competition last year, we would still want it just as much. We are Wigan which means you must aspire to be in these big games. The competition – with its heritage and tradition – means so much to everyone at the club, it’s our story and it’s one we must build on.”

Reflecting on last years success, Peet said: “When you look back on the pictures from last year and see the trophy doing the rounds in the community, you think about the memories you can build. Although it doesn’t matter what we’ve done in the past because come 5pm on Sunday we must make sure we get our fundamentals right.”

The Cherry and Whites will face Hull KR for a place in the final at Wembley Stadium in August, and on the opposition, Peet said: “We have to put in our best performance of the season because if it’s anything less then we wont be in the final.

“There won’t be any surprises on Sunday as we know what Hull KR are about. They have some outstanding individuals, and Willie [Peters] has made sure they are a team with high-effort, energy, and physicality. Now they have a set spine, I think they will start to reclimb ladder.”

When asked about the influence assistant coaches Tommy Leuluai and Sean O’Loughlin – who won a combined three Challenge Cups as players with the Warriors – have on the current squad, Peet said: “We are in a very fortunate position with Tommy and Sean as not only do they have phenomenal technical knowledge and understandings of the game, most importantly they are just two good humble blokes.

“They were both fierce competitors who provide great examples on how to be on and off the pitch, as well as helping to keep that balance when on the pursuit of excellence and during the process. If you are with someone who has been to a place before, it makes you feel safer – that’s what we gain from them.”

The Warrriors announced this morning that Kaide Ellis has signed a new three-year deal with the club, and speaking on the extension, Peet said: “Kaide showed last year what he’s capable of and this year he’s showed he deserves the extension.”

    — Wigan Warriors 🍒⚪ (@WiganWarriorsRL) July 18, 2023

He added: “There’s been a few games this season where Kaide has been excellent, but the challenge for him now is to build consistency. He’s doing everything he can off the pitch, and now that he has settled into the competition – as well as the country – we will see the best of Kaide.”

Tickets for our semi-final clash – which includes entry to the Warriors Women’s semi-final against Leeds Rhinos at 2:15pm – are available to buy online HERE and in-Store at Robin Park Arena (open Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm).

    Sunday

    • Adam Keighran to join Warriors from 2024.
    • 27-year-old signs two-year deal with the Club.
    • Keighran: “I’m eager to continue learning and improving my game under the staff at Wigan.”

Wigan Warriors are delighted to announce that Adam Keighran has signed a two-year deal with the club from the 2024 season.

The 26-year-old, who has played at centre, stand-off and hooker, will join the Warriors after the completion of the current season with the Catalans Dragons.

He began his career at Penrith Panthers playing in the New South Wales Cup where he was picked as one of two centres of the year, before making his first grade debut for the New Zealand Warriors in Round One of the 2019 season.

He then had two seasons at the Sydney Roosters making 17 NRL appearances before joining the Catalans Dragon for the 2023 season.

Adam Keighran said: “My family and I are looking forward to the next 2 years at Wigan.

“I’m eager to continue learning and improving my game under the staff there, learn the history of the Club and hoping to add to the success the Club already has.”

Wigan Head Coach Matt Peet added: “We are excited to welcome Adam and his family to Wigan.

“His form for Catalans has been excellent this season and I look forward to working with him. He will bring athleticism and a high skill level to our back line.”

    • Captain Liam Farrell reacted to Wigan’s Betfred Super League home victory over Warrington Wolves in Heritage Round.
    • Farrell: “In the second half we showed some resilience, played with the ball a bit more and we looked good.”
    • Watch highlights from Friday’s victory at the DW Stadium on Wigan TV HERE.

Liam Farrell commended the Warriors’ second half performance to beat Warrington Wolves 26-12 on Friday night, as they climbed to third in the Super League table.

The second rower scored Wigan’s final try of the night to help complete the comeback that saw the Warriors fall behind twice in the first half.

Speaking on the fixture, Farrell said: “We obviously knew we were in close contest with Warrington. They’d been travelling quite well until a few weeks ago where they’ve lost a few games on the bounce.”

“We knew we’d be under pressure early and they came out flying, which we probably didn’t deal with that well. But in the second half we showed some resilience, played with the ball a bit more and we looked good.”

The opposition were without former Warriors half-back George Williams, as Farrell discussed a crucial battle in the middle of the field that Wigan grew into as the game went on: “They were missing their halves tonight so we knew they’d be coming through the middle of us – their ruck got fast and we let them do that.”

“We got better at dealing with that in the second half, and when we did, we gave ourselves a bit of field position and a chance to post points.”

The Cherry and Whites scored 14 unanswered points in the second half after being level at the break. Farrell praised the team’s character to come back, particularly after a tough golden point defeat a week prior away to Wakefield: “It was tough to lose in the last minute, but we should’ve had that game won earlier.”

“I think coming into tonight we needed a bit of confidence and we got that with the two points. It’s great to be on a win going into the semi-final as well.”

The Warriors will be looking to carry momentum from Friday’s victory into next Sunday’s Challenge Cup Semi-final against Hull KR. Tickets for the Semi Final double header at Headingley can be bought at our Robin Park Arena Club Store or online HERE.

    • Match Report as Wigan Warriors Women defeat Warrington Wolves Women at Robin Park Arena.
    • Anna Davies crossed in either half as the Warriors scored four tries to return to winning ways.
    • FT | Wigan Warriors Women 20-12 Warrington Wolves Women.

Wigan Warriors Women returned to winning ways with a 20-12 victory over Warrington Wolves Women at Robin Park Arena.

Tries from Anna Davies and Rachel Thompson put the Warriors in front at the break after a closely-fought first half which also saw Abigail Johnston and Claire Mullaney cross for the visitors.

Quickfire tries from Davies and Holly Speakman at the start of the second half was enough for the Warriors, despite Molly Jones being sent to the sin-bin in the final 15 minutes.

    Report

Off the back of an infringement for offside, the visitors worked the ball wide to Abigail Johnston who dived over in the corner to open the scoring after five minutes.

The Warriors responded strongly, and after Beri Salihi almost set Kaitlin Hilton up in the corner, Anna Davies capitalised on a loose ball before powering her way through the defensive line to sprint in under the posts. Molly Jones added the extras to give the Warriors a 6-4 lead after 15 minutes.

An even contested unfolded at Robin Park Arena, and as the Warriors fell short on multiple attacking visits, Warrington regained the lead when Claire Mullaney forced her way over from close range. The conversion was missed, keeping the visitors’ advantage to 8-6.

Wigan replied four minutes before the break when Rachel Thompson accelerated her way through a gap in the Warrington defensive line to finish off a fantastic solo run. The conversion attempt was missed, as the Warriors maintained their 10-8 lead at the interval.

Both sides completed a set without reward in the opening stages after the restart, but two tries in two minutes from the Warriors saw their lead extend to 20-8 after 55 minutes.

First, patient play from the Warriors saw play worked wide to Thompson who picked Davies out with an excellently executed looping pass to allow the centre to dive over for her second of the afternoon, before Alison Burrows set Holly Speakman up to crash over beneath the sticks with Jodie Morris adding the extras.

Warrington hit back shortly after the hour mark when Shannon Stephens used power and pace to crash over on the wing, however, the visitors were unable to further reduce the points difference from the tee.

Despite being reduced to 12 when Jones was shown a yellow card for a high tackle on 68 minutes, the Warriors, with the help of a fantastic recovery tackle from Salihi, returned to winning ways.

    • Kai Pearce-Paul reflected on his return from injury following Wigan Warriors’ 26-12 over Warrington Wolves.
    • Pearce-Paul: “I missed being out with the lads so it was a good feeling to be back out there, especially with getting the win over Warrington as well.”
    • Watch the full interview on Wigan TV HERE.

Kai Pearce-Paul said it was a ‘good feeling’ to be back in action following Wigan Warriors’ 26-12 victory over Warrington Wolves at the DW Stadium.

The second rower came off the bench to make his 50th appearance for the club, which he marked with a Man of the Match performance on his return from a leg injury.

Speaking on his comeback, Pearce-Paul said: “I’ve spent the last eight weeks putting in a lot of hard work in the gym everyday. I missed being out with the lads so it was a good feeling to be back out there, especially with getting the win over Warrington as well.”

Despite falling behind twice in the first half, the Warriors responded with two unanswered tries after the break to claim the two points and climb to third in the Super League table.

Looking back on the game, Pearce-Paul said: “It’s never easy in Super League and tonight was always going to be tough against a team like Warrington. The first 20 minutes was hard but the boys fought well to hang in there. We grafted our way through, and in the end we got the joy.”

Reflecting on the season so far, Pearce-Paul added: “We’ve struggled to gain momentum at times but overall it’s been good. Hopefully off the back of this win we can build momentum going into more important matches in the business end of the season.”

Looking ahead to next Sunday’s Challenge Cup semi-final clash against Hull KR at Headingley Stadium, Pearce-Paul said: “I’m really excited for next week. It’s something I unfortunately missed out on last year, but I’m hungry for it this year.

“It’s going to be a big game against a good Hull KR team so hopefully we can build towards that. It’s a job I want to get done, and I’m sure all the lads in the changing rooms can tell you the same thing.”#
