The USP would be a major final played in/on the door step of the heartlands at an iconic stadium like anfield or the etihad or st James park at a considerably less expensive cost to the overwhelming majority of the fans.

With fewer people at it. SJP is a couple of hours drive minimum from rugby league heartlands, Anfield is a pain to get to, the Etihad (currently) would only have been able to accommodate the crowds at three post-war Cup Finals etc etc....

  2. This was my fourth Challenge Cup final and all have been settled by four points or less so I definitely seem to pick exciting ones!

Hull KR were fortunate to get as close as they did as they never seemed as secure on the ball, and the failure to make touch from the penalty in extra time summed this up. Leigh looked the more capable outfit and it would have been very harsh on them if they hadn't won.

Great fun match - rippling with tension throughout the second half  particularly prior to the Briscoe try.

Wish I had taken out some shares in leopard print manufacturers after the semi finals.

Now I am informed by the stasi on here that actually, I aren't a RL fan after all, I was just glory hunting (obviously RL is first choice for the glory brigade) and I should follow cricket or something. I have a ticket for the final but not going now. I've paid money to an RL event that I won't even be at? I'd say that makes you a bigger fan.

Not here to judge your decision, but claiming you are a bigger fan because you've decided not to go to the World Cup Final even though you have a ticket for it seems like a bit of a stretch...

I'm bringing my wife, to only her fourth rugby league game. I just hope it's reasonably competitive, but who would actively want to miss what is supposed to be the biggest match in the sport? If people don't support it then it is quite possible that we will not see the World Cup in this country for many many years.

Well yes, if you add loads of caveats and strip out anything that is better, we can make anything look good.

I'm just not sure how realistic it is to expect larger crowds for matches featuring players that are generally unheard of in this country.

I'm quite a fan of rugby league but I've not watched more than about 30 minutes of NRL action in my life.

And yes, cutting out everything bar the big three and three PNG home matches in 2017 is quite something.

No GB or England match against anyone other than Australia or NZ has had a bigger crowd than the Samoa opener.

Tonga v Samoa - 12.6k. It was good, but not much different to Aus v Scotland and actually lower than NZ v Ireland in Leeds for example.

It's right that we try and improve competitiveness, but I'm not sure structure change is the right way to go.

It is interesting that RL fans always criticise authorities for focusing on structure changes, but fans jump straight to that mindset too.

So I've had a quick look, and so far I can work out the crowd for Tonga v Somoa was the third largest in WC history for a match not including GB/England, Australia, NZ or PNG.

Just how many people should have been there?

  6. I was at tonight's game as I only live about 7 miles from the Coventry Arena. Yes, it was ridiculously one-sided but the crowd, mostly local and not RL regulars from what I could tell, loved it.

Addo-Carr was a huge favourite and some of the play for his last try was out of this world. Lots of kids in the crowd who seemed very excited by the whole spectacle, including a number of Wasps fans looking for something different after a very bleak week for them.

Yes a competitive game would have been amazing, but this was never likely. Instead we saw a world class side put on a really enjoyable attacking show.

And yes, only 7,000 people turned up (don't believe the official crowd figure) but on a wet Friday night two years on from when many people bought tickets in an area with a limited RL footprint and an obviously mis-matched contest? Not too bad either.
