PAUL WELLENS was delighted with the way his St Helens side bounced back from a recent dip in form to beat Catalans Dragons.
Since their last game at Magic Weekend, when they suffered a fifth Super League loss of the season, much of the talk around Saints has been about the under-pressure coach’s future.
But after their 40-0 victory against Catalans, Wellens said: “Professional sport is a crazy world at times.
“I’ve sensed (it coming) for a number of weeks now, and people just think you are losing your marbles when you feel like there’s a performance around the corner.
“But we got that tonight and I can’t credit the players enough because quite naturally there’s been a lot of heat on all of us in the last seven-to-ten days.
“You have a choice in how you want to react to that, and what the team have done really well is come together.
“We’ve had some of the best training sessions we’ve (ever) had in the last week. There’s been a real hunger and determination amongst the team to want to put things right and that was very evident.
“We had plenty of intent about us and controlled the ball a lot better than we have been doing. Some other stuff that we’ve worked on in the last couple of weeks is really coming to fruition now.
“We looked dangerous in attack and we looked solid in defence, and that’s a pretty good starting point for any game of rugby.”
