Rugby union convert would be keen on rugby league move following Warrington Wolves experience

IT’S always interesting when rugby league and union players make the switch to the other code.

Getting used to another style of game, a new environment, new teammates and even new rules can be a daunting task but some are willing to take the plunge in a bid to try out new things.

One of those players that has done just that was Luther Burrell, who, in 2019, made the move to the Warrington Wolves after a career spent in rugby union.

Burrell made just eight appearances for the Cheshire club in an 18-month period, before returning to the 15-man code to play for the Newcastle Falcons.

However, despite a disappointing period in the 13-man code, the 35-year-old would be keen to return to the sport in a consultancy role – though he has dismissed the idea of getting into coaching.

“I’d like to have a consultancy role within rugby league,” Burrell told League Express.

“In terms of coaching, my missus tells me all the time ‘why don’t you go into coaching?’ because I’m constantly watching rugby league and union.

“I analyse and critique all the time, praising players and plays and saying things like ‘this is what could have been done better’ but I don’t particularly want to be a coach.

“I feel like I still love the sports, both of them, but I feel like I can add more impact elsewhere than on the ground at the moment.

“I’m happy to let the coaches do their job and if the infrastructure needs a different perspective then I would like to be that guy.”

At present, Burrell is in a battle to fight discrimination after an investigation into his allegation of racism during his time with the Newcastle Falcons was proved correct.

As an aside from that, the 35-year-old has a number of irons in the fire.

“I’m in the process of building my foundation in the north, I’m just looking at investment for that because I think it will be impactful in communities here.

“I also do some public speaking which is fantastic, it is direct and has an impact. I have been doing that with all ages and at all infrastructures too with schools, clubs and businesses.

“I’m also doing bits of media, I’ve not got a title but I am inspired to create change after what I’ve been through.”
