Saints star in demand

St Helens forward James Bentley is the latest out-of-contract star at the Super League champions to attract interest from other clubs for 2021.

League Express revealed last week how Castleford were one of several clubs monitoring the services of Saints forward Jack Ashworth, and it is now understood that Bentley also has interest from elsewhere about a possible move next year.

Several clubs in his native Yorkshire are believed to be interested in the possibility of bringing Bentley back across the Pennines for 2021.

The 23-year-old joined St Helens on a three-year deal at the beginning of 2018, after he made his name in the Championship with Bradford Bulls.

He was one of the highest-rated prospects outside Super League when they beat off interest from numerous other top-flight clubs to land his signature, and Bentley is now receiving similar interest for next year.

Although he spent the majority of 2018 on dual-registration at Sheffield, he also made his first-team debut against Hull FC. He was subsequently called into the Ireland squad that year for the European Championship, before breaking into the Saints’ first-team last season, when he played 17 times for Justin Holbrook as he showed his versatility, impressing at hooker, back row and centre.

He has made five appearances for the side so far this season, scoring two tries, while deputising for James Roby at hooker as well as filling in across a number of other positions.
