Veivers leaves Workington

Workington Town will begin life in League 1 under a new head coach, after Phil Veivers left the club on Sunday.

The club confirmed that Veivers would not stay due to ‘financial constraints’.

Town director Mark Fryer said: “Unfortunately one of the consequences of dropping to League 1 is a significant drop in income. We will now need to restructure the club in every department due to the playing and coaching budget being considerably smaller than last season.

“Phil brought a professional attitude to the club when it was needed. He has been a great servant to our club but it is well known that a combination of circumstances has resulted in a season that has been very difficult on and off the field.

“We would like to put on record our thanks to Phil for his efforts throughout the 2016 season and his time at Workington Town and wish him the very best for the future. On a personal note this is extremely difficult because as well as our professional relationship I consider him a friend.

“I hope that Phil will always be a friend to Workington Town as we move on to the next stage in our history.”
