Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane has not ruled out bringing in a replacement for injured hooker Michael McIlorum – but stressed that there will be no panic over signing someone.
McIlorum is set for an extended absence on the sidelines after breaking and dislocating an ankle during the World Club Series defeat to Brisbane – an injury which could potentially rule him out for the season, Wane revealed on Tuesday.
They have been linked with Leigh hooker Bob Beswick as a potential replacement, but Wane says he won’t act until he knows more about the extent of McIlorum’s injury.

“It’s a long one, it could be a season-long one. He’s being operated on next week and he’s going for another scan tomorrow so we’ll know more then,” he told rugby-league.com.
“There’s no panic at the moment because we’ve got Sam Powell and other people who can jump in – Kyle Shelford, Josh Ganson and Luke Waterworth, who is injured at the moment.
“If I can bring someone in who makes us better, I will do that but for the next week or so I am going to see what pans out with Micky.”
Wane has drafted youngster Joe Bretherton into his squad for Thursday’s home clash against Salford, with Sam Powell set to be handed a start and a promotion from the interchange bench in light of McIlorum’s injury.
