WIDNES VIKINGS coach Allan Coleman hailed his side’s workrate and spirit after their 18-14 opening-round win over Toulouse in France.
Tries by Max Roberts, Matty Fleming and Ryan Lannon plus three Tom Gilmore goals sealed their success.
Widnes were without backs Jack Owens, Ryan Ince, Joe Edge and Rhys Williams as well as hooker Jordan Johnstone.
And dual-registration Warrington winger Alfie Johnson and forward Liam Kirk suffered head knocks during the game.
“We did it tough, and I was delighted for the boys,” said Coleman, who guided his charges to last year’s play-offs.
“We have that desire to be successful throughout this great club. The players want to work hard.”
Widnes have been handed a plum Challenge Cup fourth-round tie at home to neighbours and dual-registration partners Warrington in mid-March.
The Vikings’ next league game is at home to Sheffield on Sunday.
