Bradford Bulls claimed their first piece of silverware since the 2006 World Club Challenge courtesy of victory in the 2016 Championship Shield Final against Sheffield Eagles.

The Bulls, heavy favourites to win the final after dismantling the Eagles 80-0 a fortnight ago, were pushed all the way by Mark Aston’s side in a commendable effort from the Eagles.

Trailing 18-0 in the first half after two tries for Adam O’Brien and departing captain Adrian Purtell, Sheffield fought back to within two points at 18-16 and looked capable of causing an upset.

However, two late tries from Kris Welham – taking him to 30 for the season – either side of a drop goal from Dane Chisholm secured a 27-16 win.

Attention now turns to the off-season for both teams, with the Eagles’ future in particular up in the air.
