Charnley dropped and must improve, says Shaun Wane

Wigan coach Shaun Wane said he dropped star winger Josh Charnley for the Warriors’ Super League clash with Wakefield yesterday because of a poor performance in the World Club Challenge.

The England international, 22, has been Super League’s top try scorer for the last two seasons, and scored twice against Sydney, but Wane says he must “learn to perform” before he will be considered for a recall. On Sunday he was replaced by 20-year-old Dom Manfredi, who scored his first Super League try in Wigan colours.

“He was dropped,” said Wane.

“He knows that and knows he needs to improve to get back in the team. I’m very comfortable doing that and giving Dom Manfredi his chance. Josh didn’t play well in Sydney. What is really important for me is that Josh Charnley learns he need to perform.”
