Cockayne buoyed by Hull KR’s attempts to sign Zak Hardaker

Hull Kingston Rovers full-back Ben Cockayne believes the signing of Zak Hardaker would be one of the club’s biggest ever transfers.

League Express broke the news on Monday that Rovers were one of several clubs, including the Catalans Dragons, chasing his signature for 2017.

A big overhaul is expected within the club’s playing ranks at the end of the season should they avoid relegation, with an objective of ensuring they don’t find themselves in their current predicament going forward.

Rovers are thought to be in a strong position to land the current Man of Steel, given his friendship with head of rugby and now Rovers player Jamie Peacock.

Cockayne, who would be in direct competition with Hardaker should he join the club, has backed the club’s attempts to sign the England international.

“It would be a massive signing for the club, probably the biggest since I’ve been here and one of the club’s biggest ever,” he told TotalRL.

“I’m not really sure what his plans are, but for us to be linked with somebody like Zak is massive really. I’d be absolutely over the moon if we could get somebody of his quality in because number one it strengthens the team, but it also attracts other high-quality players.

“He is one of those players that when you’re doing a preview of another team, his name will always be brought up; his elusive running or defensive capabilities. Whatever team he plays in, he will be a dangerous player within that team. It would be great if Hull KR could pull off a signing like that.”
