Cunningham blasts Bennett’s England plans

Keiron Cunningham has launched a scathing attack on Wayne Bennett’s plans for an overseas pre-season training camp.

Speaking to League Express, the St Helens head coach described the plans as “disgraceful”, despite Bennett claiming that he has the “assistance” of numerous Super League coaches.

In a strong interview, Cunningham fumes about the increased workload being put on elite players, and believes the RFL and Bennett are largely to blame.

“The whole system is absolutely abysmal,” Cunningham said.

“Both what has been put forward and what has been accepted by the powers-that-be.

“They’re talking about player welfare more and more in Australia because they have some five-day turnarounds. Over here, you throw in another ten games, a shorter pre-season, two double-header weekends and a mid-season Test match and you’ve got a mess.”
