Doncaster aim to be fitter than ever for new Championship season

DONCASTER chief executive Carl Hall says the appliance of science is helping make Richard Horne’s squad fitter than ever.

The former Hull player and coaching staff member is honing his side for a second successive Championship campaign after building on the promotion from League One of 2023 with an eighth-placed finish last season.

Horne’s reshaped pool of players take on a team from his former club at the Eco-Power Stadium on Sunday with a second warm-up match at home to Sheffield seven days later.

Former Dons player Hall joked: “There is no hiding place, they’ve got the systems at training now so the staff can see the miles they’re doing and how quick they’re going.

“They’ve got a weekly competition of who is the fastest, fittest and has run the most, and they’re putting the work in.”

Former Hull forwards Josh Bowden, brought in from Wakefield, and Andre Savelio, freshly added to the squad after departing Huddersfield, could face the Black and Whites.

But packman Tyla Hepi is still on his way back from the anterior cruciate ligament injury which limited him to eleven games last year.

It’s hoped the experienced Kiwi, who was signed from Featherstone, will be available by March.

“I’m on the journey back,” he said. “Last year fans didn’t get to see the best of me because of the injury. The club have been great and now I want to pay them back.”
