Ex-Leeds Rhinos star interested in Castleford Tigers’ assistant coach role

CASTLEFORD TIGERS’ new head coach Andy Last has outlined his intention to bring in an assistant coach after he was elevated to the main role.

Former Halifax Panthers and Keighley Cougars playmaker Scott Murrell has currently been doing the number two role at The Jungle, but Last revealed this week that he is on the lookout for a new assistant coach.

Last said: “We are on the lookout for an assistant coach, it is one we are looking for We have been having some conversations but I don’t want to reveal too much in that sense,” Last said.

“There are some options out there, a couple of guys applied for the head coaching job have expressed an interest and I’ve had some chats with those as well as looking within the game.

“We are looking to try and come up with what is best for both parties. I don’t want to rush it, it is an important appointment.”

League Express understands that one of those interested in taking the role at The Jungle is former Leeds Rhinos second-rower/fullback Matt Adamson.

Adamson made 72 appearances for the Rhinos between 2002 and 2024, becoming a big hit at Headingley with his direct running style and enthusiasm.

The 50-year-old hung up his boots following the culmination of the 2005 NRL season with the Canberra Raiders and turned his hand to coaching.

Adamson has held coaching roles for Melbourne Storm’s Under-20s and Penrith Panthers – with whom he played 157 games for before making the move to England – but is now talent identification lead for the Titan Sports Management player agency group.
