Ex-Salford Red Devils chief executive Paul King breaks silence on Super League club return

FORMER Salford Red Devils chief executive Paul King has broken his silence on his return to the ailing Super League club.

King, who left the club following a takeover of a consortium led by Swiss businessman Dario Berta, has paid Salford’s player wages for the past three months.

Now he has returned to the club in an ‘advisory role’ after previous chief executive Chris Irwin – the man who replaced King in the first place – ‘resigned’ from his post last week.

King told League Express: “I’ve been pulled in from gardening leave to advise, that’s all. It’s all very short-term.”

The impending financial disaster at the Red Devils has been rugby league’s most pertinent talking points in the past few months, with King himself putting his own house up as leverage against loans.

The Red Devils have had to sell some of their main stars throughout the year, with Marc Sneyd, Brad Singleton, Chris Atkin, Deon Cross and Tim Lafai just some of those leaving the club.

In doing so, Salford’s performances on the field – despite the best efforts of head coach Paul Rowley – have suffered greatly, with the Red Devils now sitting bottom of the Super League ladder with just one win.
