Former Leeds Rhinos back Luis Roberts explains decision to join Midlands Hurricanes

MIDLANDS HURRICANES recruit Luis Roberts has revealed he chose Birmingham ahead of opportunities to stay in Super League.

The 22-year-old Wales international made 13 appearances for Leeds last season, but was then released.

The outside back who has also been at Salford, Swinton and Leigh linked up with the Hurricanes and went on to make a try-scoring debut in their 14-16 league win over Goole.

“I did have a quite a few offers to stay in Super League but they just didn’t pan out,” said Roberts.

“I told my agent that I just wanted to go and play somewhere that I’d be really happy.

“Off the back of that I spoke to (coach) Mark Dunning and he told me what he wanted me to do – play with a smile on my face – and I immediately put pen to paper.”

Dunning is equally happy to secure the services of Roberts, saying: “I thought he went really well against Goole.

“He’s new to the group and he has been welcomed with open arms by the players and staff alike.

“I have worked with him previously (at Bradford, when Dunning coached and Roberts was on loan) and he’s a quality young man who has a lot of ability.

“He was lost to the game (after leaving Leeds), a bit like Callum McLelland before we rescued him, and he’s far too good a player not to be playing.”
